Question:
Did anyone else have a 4 week plateau 2 1/2 months post op?

I'm considered a "lightweight" and I expect a slow weight loss. However, I lost 40lbs the first 7 weeks (which is great), but I haven't lost 1 pound since! I could understand 1-2 pounds here and there, but I completely stopped! I'm still 60lbs overweight - could this be it?!? Did I go through all this for 40 lousy pounds? Has any other "lightweights" gone through this? Need some encouragement! Thanks!    — jengrz (posted on January 29, 2003)

I was a "lightweight" with a BMI of 40. Are you getting in all of your protein and water? If you areen't getting in enough protein your bod will go into "starvation mode" and lower your BMR "Basil Metabolic Rate or Metabolism. This is the main cause of plateaus. In my profile I have a lot of details about this. Lightweights do not always lose slower. I hit goal in under six months. At 8 months I have lost 120 pounds and don't really want to lose any more.

Hi, Jennifer, I too, was a "lightweight". I am 5' 6" and I weighed 258 lbs. I had my surgery 9/27/01. At 2 1/2 months I had lost ONLY 24 lbs! I was freaked out. But after about 4 months it really began to come off. I am at goal now, (size 6-8). I am very happy w/my results. Anyway, I feel the slower you lose it, the better condition your skin will be. At least that's what I have found./ Patti Meadows/ e-mail: [email protected]

Jennifer, I just had to answer your question for two reasons: 1. I am also a lightweight.... 2. I have the same name. I had a starting BMI of 40. It was probably lower because I said I was 5'9 in order to make it 40, I am really 5' 11 inches. I had the VGB done 9/16/02. Well, the first month I lost 24 pounds....the second about 10...and then nothing for 2 months. Well, I was discouraged completely. I just recently started another dropping spree....around 2.5 pounds a week so all in all I've dropped another 15...I have a feeling it will take another 8 months to lose the last 65 pounds....I dont have an answer to your question...I just understand where you are coming from!

Hi Jennifer: Believe me, I understand where you are coming from. I am 5 months postop lap rny. I started with a BMI of 38.8. I lost 25 pounds the first month. Month 2 was a disaster, losing 8 pounds. I thought that I was done. But I wasn't. For myself, my weight just drops when it wants to, no matter how much I exercise, or even what I eat. I do get my 55 grams of protein in per day, but days that I eat carbs, I seem to lose the next day. That never seems to matter. I will tell you that for myself, after the first month of losing 25 pounds, I have lost 1-2 pounds almost every week. One week I stayed the same, and one week I had a huge loss of 5 pounds. But I never lost a tremendous amount in one week. Maybe your pattern will be the same as mine. Do not get discouraged. It will truly come off, just not in big amounts. It will definitely add up over time. Hope this helps. Love Grace
