Question:
I'm two weeks post-op snd am having trouble eating.
I knew after the surgery your taste would change. But, I really dread eating. Nothing appeals to me. Will this change? — Debbie W. (posted on March 28, 2003)

You're only 2 weeks post op. Of course it will change. Chill out dude
(ok, too many teenagers around me). But seriously, stick to your liquids
and a time schedule, sip some every hour or so and call it a day.

Please don't feel the need to push yourself past where you are comfortable.
I was a very cautious "eater" in the beginning (a lot of nausea
and discomfort made me that way) and stuck to a very soft diet for about 6
weeks while those around me were more adventerous. My tastes are getting
back to normal, things are not so exagerated in taste. Everything seemed
sweet and gross in the beginning. I just kept trying to keep my eye on the
prize, which for me is the weight loss. I found myself very frustrated with
the whole prospect of eating and wished many times that I had not done
this. What I can tell you is that at 10 weeks I feel SO much better and the
eating is MUCH easier. If you listen to your body and let it heal in it's
own time I think you are better off than pushing yourself to eat things
that are upsetting you. BUT- try to get the fluids in, it is the most
important thing in your early recovery to stay hydrated. I found that warm
went down easier than cold. I got some herbal tea and splenda and added a
few ounces of skim milk for protein. (take it where you can get it in the
beginning.)Good Luck!!!! I know it sucks but I think a lot of people feel
as you do at 2 weeks out. Be nice to yourself! :)

I have to agree with the other posts... With time your tastes will change
and you will find it easier to eat. I have found that eating isn't nearly
as much fun as it used to be.. but then again that was the reason I had the
surgery. You will find foods that appeal to you. Go slow in the first few
weeks and follow your Dr's orders and you will start to feel more
"normal" as time progress. Take care and good luck!

Debbie, don't push yourself. All you should be concerned with this early
on is staying hydrated. DOn't let yourself get dehyrated, don't worry
about food, protein either. heather (open rny 8/15, down 102lbs)

Yes, it will change, but not for awhile. At about 5 months post op things
started tasting right again. There are still some things that I hate the
taste even though I used to love it, but overall my tastes have gone back
to normal. Read my profile I have some foods listed that I was eating at
each stage.

It's called the "honeymoon phase" Many of us literally have to
force ourselves to eat, and we lose the most weight. It will pass, usually
around the 6 month mark you get an appetite and actually enjoy eating
again. I know it seems like a dread, I hated it when I was in that period,
I had to force myself to get enough protein. But now that I have an
appetite and actually get hungry- I wish I was where you are! But at 2
weeks, the biggest concern is water and staying hydrated. Then try to get
protein in, if it's only 30 grams (which is alot early on) then so be it.
It will most likely take you a few months to be able to get to the full
capacity of protein, atleast 60 + grams a day. Goodluck to you.
