Question:
As my last question mentioned I m 10 weeks post op only down 50lbs I have pcos

I stopped taking it before surgery, my internist thought I did not need it any more, sugars were normal. My endo however, put me on it, because of pcos. I am now wondering if I take it again will my weightloss increase due to controlled insulin resistance with the glucophage not only for that reason but because of hirsutism as well. I eat low carb high protein about 700 600-700 calories a day. I workout at curves and Golds gym 5 times a week, I know i am loosing inches I just feel my loss is extremely slow due to pcos. At my starting weigh tof 337 I shoul dhave lost more by now.    — Lisa G. (posted on August 25, 2003)

You're very impatient, aren't you? Did you ever manage to lose 50 pounds in 10 weeks prior to surgery? That's 5 pounds a week average! That's great! If your doctor has prescribed medication for you since having surgery, I don't understand your reluctance to take it. If the medication was prescribed before surgery, go back and have the tests done again. Your levels may have changed and the medication is no longer needed. Either way, 50 pounds in 10 weeks is a wonderful loss. Stop judging your results against everyone elses. We're all different and loss at different rates. You're doing great -- hang in there!

Average weightloss for two months is 27-44 pounds. So at 50, you are on the high average side.

Your internist "thought" you could go off it, but your Endo "put you on it"... I personally wouldn't have gone off it unless your Endo said so- what does your internist know about PCOS? My sugars are normal but my Endo Rx for me because Met/Gluc is actually "good" for PCOS patients regardless of sugar or Diabetes... it helps us, period. I also do not think you are eating enough to justify weight loss- up your intake.

Are you having your percentage of body fat checked? If you are working out that much, you are probably losing a significant amount of fat, and gaining muscle, which is great, and will nearly guarentee you longterm success. I agree with the previous posts- both that 50 pounds in ten weeks is a fine amount of loss, and that you should probably be eating more. Get hooked up with a nutritionist who can measure bosy fat percentage and resting metabolic rate to see how many calories your body is burning at rest. Hang in there!

My surgeon was happy with the rate of my weight loss but I thought I was slow. I went to my endo and he said I should have never stopped taking the glucophage (I was taking 1000mg 2X pre day). I went back on it and I am still losing at the same rate, but my periods are much better. So I will continue to take it. Besides I an still losing about 10 lbs a month and I am 6 months out!

My Gyno put me on Glucophage 2 years ago for PCOS and insulin resistance. My surgeon doesn't think I need it but I have asked to continue taking it for that reason. I do think it has helped my weight loss. Starting stats 5'5" 291 -76 lbs (215) in 3.5 months. I think that's pretty darn good.

50 lbs in 10 weeks is not slow at all. I started at 442 and lost about exactly the same in 20 weeks. I lost 22 the first month. However, I am about 10 days shy of 7 months and I am now at a total of 136 since surgery and 157 total since Jan. 16th. I have staedily averaged 20 lbs per month. So keep up the work and follow your plan. It will come. Before you know it the numbers will be adding up just great. By the way I have a 25 year history of severe secondary ammenorhea. PCOS has definitely not slowed down my weight loss. Personally I think too many doctor's jump to using diabeties drugs for PCOS without a great track record. JMO.

Typo on my previous post. I was at the same point - 50 lbs in 10 weeks, not 20 weeks.
