Question:
About Nioxin. It helps with regrowth, but I am wondering...

I hear a lot about Nioxin helping with hair regrowth, but does it really help to prevent the expected and normal hair loss after WLS? If so when should one start using it?    — sissie S. (posted on September 24, 2003)

I just went to my hairdresser (my surgery is 10/13) and they said start taking Biotin now. They said do both the pills AND the shampoo (expensive, but less than Nioxin) and continue after the surgery. Good Luck.

Some people swear this product helps but others say not. usually nothing like vitamins or shampoo will help if you are going to be one of those persons to lose hair after surgery. The hair loss is caused by a number of things and is not the same for everyone. Sometimes, it is lack of protein, but other times it is from the anesthesia and trauma of going thru the surgery. Not just wls either. I have had several major surgeries and have lost hair each time. Nothing has helped or prevented it. The good thing though is that it does eventually stop coming out and grows back in. Sometimes better than ever.

I had surgery just about a year ago and took Biotin before and started using Nioxin before surgery as well. I am still using both at this time. I still lost hair from months 6-9, but my hair is growing back in thicker and fuller!

I lost a lot of hair between months 2 and 8. During that time, I used the Nioxin products. If they made a difference, I would hate to see how much hair I would have lost WITHOUT them!!! However, I loved the smell and how they made my scalp and hair feel. I don't think they helped minimize my hair loss, but at a time when I felt completely helpless, using the Nioxin products made me feel that at least I was doing SOMETHING!! Shelley

I started using Nioxin even before I had the surgery. I had thinning hair due to my insulin resistance, and found the Nioxin really helped. After I knew about the surgery and the potential for hair loss, I continued to use all the Nioxin products. I lost hair from months 2-7, but also had regrowth during the same time. I got my hair cut when the hair loss (what was coming out in my hands) was at its worst, and my hairdresser complimented me about how thick my hair had gotten. She couldn't get over it when I told her that I was losing hair-- she couldn't tell at all.
