Question:
When do you take your vitamins?

I just started soft food. I ate my breakfast and took my viactiv and I feel full should I wait till lunch to take my flintstones, iron and vitamin C? Thank you Mary Jane    — mary jane S. (posted on October 9, 2003)

I do protein shake first, before any foods. Then food with vites. When I took iron + C (I have a special issue with iron), it was with this first non-dairy, non-caffeine meal. Next meal was the multi, calcium CITRATE (Viactiv is not for WLS), A, D, E, zinc. Next meal would be the other multi, calcium CITRATE (whatever of those above I repeat or didn't take) and final meal is more calcium. I take pills when I eat, eat when I take pills. No pills? No food. Pills dissolve better in saliva than water, but really, the reasons I do it this way is neither meals nor pills are forgotten and, um, well, I can't swallow pills with liquids (stupid throat).

MaryJane, go to the library (link above) and check out calcium citrate vs. calcium carbonate (viactiv) now. As a new post-op you need to start out on the right foot with the right vitamins. I take a citrate in the am, and my multi-vitamins and another citrate before bedtime. Keep an eye on your B-12 too when you have lab work done, many posties need to supplement with B-12.

Great Question!!!! especially since I am on iron with C 2 X a day, and I don't like to take all my calcium at one time so I split it up, and then the multis, and can't take Iron and Calcium at the same time. WHEW!!!! I got off my meds with surgery but take more pills now in supplements!
