Question:
I am almost 12 weeks post-op and have only lost 45 lbs

I am getting upset, I don't eat alot and have not lost anything in almost 1 month. Any suggestions, I drink my water and usually have 1 egg/1 slice cheese for breakfast, chili or soup or salad for lunch and whatever I cook for my family for supper.    — Lisa W. (posted on November 12, 2003)

I am 13 weeks post op and have lost 45 lbs.,and nothing moved on the scales past 2 weeks but, I can tell in my clothes. I eat about the same as you, somedays not as much. Still having trouble with getting all my liquids in. I never thought I'd have to make myself eat and drink! The scale is just a number, and I'm trying to go by what I feel and look like and that is FANTASTIC!! Hang in there, it'll happen for us!

Hi, I read your profile and was baffled that your surgeon doesn't want you to have cottage cheese and yogurt. For many of us, those are good protein choices recommended by our nutritionist/surgeons. Are you sure you haven't misunderstood him? As long as the yogurt is sugar free (no added sugars, there will be sugar from the milk - Blue Bunny brand from Walmart is pretty good). It looks to me like you might not be getting enough protein unless you are doing supplements (1 egg w/cheese plus whatever you have at dinner probably totals less than 30 grams a day). You should be shooting for at least 65 grams of protein daily. Also, if you are not getting enough calories, your body may be going into "starvation mode" (some people don't believe in it, some do) and trying to hold onto every ounce it can. At 12 weeks, I would think you should be around 700-800 calories a day or so. At 5 months, I'm around 900-1000 a day. One last thing, you plan calls for 3 meals a day with no snacks - eating plans vary from surgeon to surgeon, you might want to see a nutritionist who deals with WLS patients and see what they say. My plan calls for eating 6 times a day (3 meals, 3 snacks) in order to keep you metabolism up and your blood sugar levels more even. I'm normally eating my last meal (snack) at 9:00 pm or so. Granted, it's usually a small chunk of cheese or some cottage cheese with pineapple, but it's protein. Good Luck

Lisa, if my math is correct, you lost 45 pounds in eight weeks since you haven't lost anything in a month. That's averaging 5.6 pounds per week! My doctor told me approximately how much I could expect to lose each week and so far, he has been absolutely correct. Did your doctor tell you how much he expected you to lose? Maybe you should write down everything for a few days so you can show the doctor you're doing this right. It would also show you if you're gettin enough calories. It doesn't sound like you're eating enough. But overall, it seems like you're doing very well to me and I would bet, that if you continue doing the protein first, lots of water, and exercise, you'll break that plateau pretty soon and show a significant loss.

Sounds like you're not eating enough protein. Make sure you get 60 grams a day. I don't lose unless I get 60+.

Your profile doesn't indicate what your starting BMI was, but for a lightweight (if you are one), 45 pounds in 12 weeks is just fine, and par for the course. Are you exercising? If you can, it might be time to start concentrating on that area.

Let me ask you this. Would you have lost 45 lbs in 12 weeks if you didn't have the surgery? The surgery is a tool so don't abuse it. Make sure you are eating 3 meals and 2 snacks. Get that protein in. You note doesn't say if you are exercising. You need to exercise everyday (walking is the best). Please do not think that because a friend or you have read that someone lost 60 lbs. in 12 weeks that you should also. I would right down what you are eating because it sounds like you are not getting your protein. Eating the protein will help you heal and make you lose weight along with exercise. You really need to plan your meals. For example, when you have your soup are you adding Fat free Cheese and your power milk? With that soup add some diced up chicken or fish. More protein. Your note doesn't say what your weight was before the surgery. Again, everyone is different. Keep a log of what you eat. Show your doctor and see what he or she says. Good Luck...

I think you are doing OK. I would try and add 1 or protein supplements to up the protein. You are getting 64 oz in of water right.
