Question:
For those of you who did without protein drinks, what was your post op diet like?

Instead of protein drinks, I just made sure everything I ate had lots of protein in it. I ate cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken, fish, etc. I ate only protein foods for the first few weeks. My surgeon keeps you on a clear diet for three days and then moves you to a soft diet until your 10 day check-up. Then you can begin to experiment with different foods after that. All surgeons are different in their post-op diet requirements. I've noticed the great majority keep their patients on a liquid/soft diet for several weeks. However, I've done great following my surgeon's suggestions. I think the key is that I almost exclusively ate protein the first few weeks and really continue to do so for the most part now. Good luck!

On my 6th postop day I started full liquids. At the advice of the dietician I added non-fat dry milk, evaporated milk, and sugar free instant breakfast drink to everything I could in order to get in enough protein.

My surgeon told me to drink two Slim-Fast a day for protein and I had no problems. I still drink at least 3 a week.

My surgeon tells us to avoid protein drinks. We were to get our protein from skim milk at first - mixed with diet pudding or creamed soups, yogurt; we quickly jumped to cottage cheese, beans then fried hamburger (drained) and could have chili, tuna salad, chicken salad, peanut butter. I was actually on real food by 2 weeks post op from open RNY surgery except did have to wait 2 extra weeks for raw fruits and veggies. I craved protein and I have not thrown up even once since surgery on 4/4/00. However, I am losing hair!
