Question:
Due to problems I am not a candidate for RNY but maybe able to have the DS/BPD

procedure. I would like to know what to expect both long and short term post op in terms of bowel problems, specifically diarrhea and foul smelling stools. If you have had this operation could you please tell me of your experience?    — [Anonymous] (posted on April 24, 2001)

At 10 months post-op, I do not have any diarrhea, and have not had since the first week or so after surgery. And naturally, my sh*t don't stink! Actually, I would say that my stools smell pretty darn bad. I would not say they smell any worse than my non-surgically altered husband. Flatulence, which occurs several times a week can be pretty smelly. - Kate -

I have decided on BPD/DS after gobs of reseach, but expect a fight with my insurance company. Out of curosity, what type of complications would make you not a candidate for RNY but a candidate for BPD/DS?

I am 2 weeks post op today and medically I couldn't have the RNY as it was potentially life threatening to me since I had surgery in Aug. 2000 for Acid Reflux. My Dr. did the BPD/DS and I am thrilled. Also, my ins. excludes the BPD but my Dr. fought for me since I can't have the RNY. I would do it again in a heart beat. Recovery has been very easy. The only problem I have had so far with stools were in the hospital with the anesthesia and gas. Everything has been normal since I have been home and nothing smells any worse than before surgery. I don't think I go as much, sometimes everyday but on occasion everyother day. I have been eating soft foods since day 2 and I have had the insides of stuffed shells,meatloaf,baked/mashed potatoes, pureed carrots, bananas, peaches, yogurt, string cheese, eggs, toast, oatmeal to name a few. I certainly do not feel deprived. Do your research on the procedure, the surgeon and the hospital. Also, your follow up care. Any questions don't hesitate to contact me. I am 25 lbs done in 11 days! I don't know if this is right for you but it certainly was for me and if your Dr.'s recommending it than I would consider taking his advice. I take my vitamins 3x day-every meal. For me it's a no brainer!

I'm 18 months post op and am more convinced than ever I chose the right surgery for me. To be able to eat without food rectrictions and lose my weight is a great thing. The gas & odor is controllable, just the same as before surgery. Certain foods cause gas. It's different for everyone what they might be. For me, it's sodas & ice cream. Easy to substitute and avoid the problem. I have no diarrhea. Check out my website: (http://www.mywls.com) --->>

I'm 16 mos. post-op and have softer stools than pre-op. My BM's occur mainly in the morning, so I allow a little more time before leaving home, about 15 minutes. I turn on the fan, and spray air freshener when I'm done. But I've always kept air freshener in the bathroom, like most people, because most BMs stink. Exactly what *YOU* can expect, no one can say. We each have a different experience. Some post-ops have a problem with constipation, some are like me, with softer stools. Some see no difference. Whatever your outcome, the liklihood is that only small changes will be required to accomodate your needs.
