Question:
Will the Surgery Incision from Open RNY ever heal?

I am 18 yrs old,and have a surgery date scheduled.I just wanted to know if the surgery incision will ever heal after you have had the Open RNY.I was kinda hoping to one day go to the beach without a shirt...however that is totally secondary and not imprtant...but I still would like to know.    — Miko P. You will have a scar forever - how obvious it is depends on the skill of your surgeon, and how your own body heals. Most scars fade significantly over time. If scarring (or the lack thereof) is really important, you may want to consider laparoscopic surgery if that's an option. At one year post op, my lap scars are almost not visible (of course, they are competing with some pretty impressive stretch marks!). I do not think the casual observer would be able to tell I'd had surgery. - Kate -

Your incision will "heal", but you will be left with a scar. There is no way of knowing how that scar will look. You're young so you may end up with a light line. I'm older and tend to heal with a thick scar. If you want to go to the beach without a shirt go ahead. Lots of people have scars on their stomach or elsewhere.

Will you scar VANISH? No. But some of us heal almost invisibly (my husband, who could care less) and some of us do not (me, who does care, but not overly). If you are prone to forming keloids (thick, ropey scar), then you can have that injected by a dermatologist. That will make it lie down flat, and begin to fade. There are products that help fade the color, too, even if it is a normal scar. I use Scargo myself.

I am 14months Post-op. With an ugly scar. You're soooo young to have to care around a scar like mine. Is there any way for you to have it done Laparoscopic? I will pray for you. I think it is so important at your age. You'll have a whole adult life of being free of the disease of Obesity. Good Luck, and God Bless --
