Question:
Are you dissatisfied with your post-WLS weight loss?

I was recently trying to encourage someone else on this board asking a similar question. However, in the weeks that have followed, I feel like I'm in a complete weight loss standstill. Is it normal for plateaus to last for MONTHS? I try not to get so intense on losing like others have, but then it does stand out that plenty of people had surgery AFTER me (7/13/01) and have lost more weight. Also, I notice that I can hold more when I eat. I know that the size of the pouch increase with time. However, it seems as though I can now eat a "normal" amount of food for a meal. Is anyone else encountering this?    — Jennifer P. (posted on May 3, 2002)

My PCP is a PCP for many patients who have had RNY. She told me that almost no one lost as much weight as they wanted, and a quite a few of them never got below "overweight". She also told me the only way to break a plateau is by decreasing your caloric intake, increasing how much you burn, or a combination of the two. They key is that whatever you do, make sure it's not so drastic that you won't be able to sustain it. You might want to try working with a nutritionist to get some advice, and of course, exercise helps. Good luck to you.

Renee your PCP should come here and see how many like me loose it all. Keep a food diary for a week of EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. Take it to your nutronist for review. Its normal to eat more. Are you still loosing inches? On plateaus I lost inches big time. Your weight today one you were at a long time? Your body remembers old comfy weights and tries to remain there. How about exercise? I lost 8 pounds in just over a week doing house demolition for hours every day, mnostly shoveling debris. Go volunterer for habitat for humanuty or other worthwhile group, and tell them you want to work HARD! Now get moving, and see your nutronist.

I have lost 90 lbs since Aug 2001, but I have been playing with the last 4 of that for about 3 months. No mind you, my clothes are still loosening up, people at work are gasping everytime they see me, saying "My Lord, you keep getting smaller and smaller everytime I see you, how much more have you lost?" I just felt so dumb founded, because this has been asked of me for months and I still can only answer "90 lbs". I saw my WLS doctor yesterday, we did the regular routine. I told him that my hair was just now starting to come back in, (I have little 2 inch sprigs sticking up all over my head!) I also told him about the "stand still". His answer made alot of sense. He said, being that your hair is coming back in, that tells me your protein levels have returned. I bet your clothes are fitting different, and people say you are losing weight, still. You see, protein weighs more than fat. What you need to do is get on a treadmill and walk. Do it for at least 1/2 an hour, 30 minutes. Because, carbs are only burned in the first 20 minutes, then fat starts to burn. I am starting a fast walking regime, as I haven't a treadmill. I'll let you know how that goes. Anyways after hearing this explanation, I am much more motivated and encouraged. I am back at it gung hoe, this won't stop me!

You talk about a being dissatistisfied and neededing some encouragement. My post op date was Feb 16, 2001 and I weigh the same exact weight I did last July. stuck, stuck on the same exact number.vacillating between 4 and 5 pounds between the months. Give me some encouragement, please.. I don't fault the WLS surgery for I know I could never fit in a size 10 jeans without this surgery, but it would have been nbice to meet the Surgeons goal of a size 3/4. Oh well, I stopped losing weight completed at six months after surgery, 6 months.

I am so glad that someone said this!! I had a VBG on 10-3-01 and I have only lost 60 POUNDS! That is so disheartening! I went through all the pain and suffering only to end up on a diet again. I have lost inches and I have gone from a size 26 to a 14. I am truly thankful for that! But i am still considered obese. The last 10 pounds that I have lost..I had to work HARD to get them off. REALLY HARD. I also notice that I am able to hold more when I eat. True enough it is not as much as the average pre-op person. But it is more that a post-op should eat...(in my opinion. I got pregnant 3 months post op and I wonder if that stretched my pouch somehow. I dont know. I DO KNOW that it IS very frustrating. And the only advise that i can give is DONT GIVE UP!!!! All of us have come to far to do that. I will be skinny someday...I just have to work harder and it will take a little bit longer that expected. I just tell myself..the slower you lose it, the less skin you will have!
