Question:
Has anyone who did not have ulcers pre-op get one post-op?

I am a little over 3 weeks post-op lap rny. I was having pain and my doctor ordered an upper GI. He said that I have an ulcer. How can this be if there is no acid in the new pouch. Has anyone else experienced this?    — tulagirl (posted on August 14, 2002)

Tammi. My surgeon says he has had this problem enough that he test everyone for the acid that causes ulcers before surgery. It seems if you have the acid before you will most likely get an ulcer soon after surgery. He requires two weeks of meds to get rid of the acid before he will do surgery if you test positive for it. Good Luck

Did he refer to it as a marginal ulcer? Right in the new stoma? I had several of those before I was transected. They are more common with distals, than proximals, but they are not rare. Presumably he has tested for h.pylori, but that did not cause mine. If there is any compromise in the staple line (as there was with mine), there can be a little drizzle of acids & such back up into the pouch. Very annoying. I was one who was subject to ulcers previously, BUT down in the bottom, not near the top. A marginal ucler is very specific.

I wonder how many staple lines your dr used? I saw an article that compared the risk of ulceration for different numbers of staple lines. The risk for 4 rows was pretty minimal but there was a big jump in ulceration when the surgeons used 8 rows. It seems that the more trauma is introduced to that area, the greater the risk of ulceration.
