Question:
Need some advice I am three and 1/2 months out and have only lost 70lbs.

I exercise regularly, have a personal trainer. I recently have modified my eating habits and 6lbs came off, but this week nothing, not even a 1/2 pound. I really need some advice on getting off this plateau. I am averaging about 700-900 cals. a day. I workout five days a week, although I recently hurt myself so my cardio training has been limited. I am at my wits end with how to kick start the weightloss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. — gloria M. (posted on September 26, 2002)

Gloria, you're doing great! Just remember to keep your fat and carbs down and protein and water up and you'll do fine. Your body occasionally needs to catch up to all the changes it has gone through.

I don't know if one week without a loss counts as a plateau... but it doesn't matter.. its difficult... make sure to keep your protein up and eat more often space the food out... and drink more water... can you do some other form of cardio until your injury heals? Recumbent bike or something similar? Keep track of what you're eating on something like fitday if you're not doing that already.. and limit your carbs...

Man, sometimes people do need a 'wake-up call', but in this case it sounds as if Amanda 'woke up' on the wrong side of the bed. Yikes Amanda, she is just looking for a little reassurance here. That is what this board is for, support. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all, ever hear that one? Maybe you should consider living more by that. Gloria, your loss is fine. As you know, we are all very different and lose at different paces! Many lose 100 lbs. by 6 months. Me, I have lost less than 100 and am 10 months out. I am at goal and feel great, but my loss was nice and slow and don't have a whole lot of excess skin to deal with. People talk about breaking plateaus, but that is the natural process and it WILL eventually break. I am losing 5 lbs. or less a month now, and its not as fun as in the beginning, but it is part of the process and I have accepted it. I had a plateau that lasted almost 6 weeks...that was NOT fun!! I thought that the losing was over and that was it, but it started again and still going. It'll happen. Try to relax and enjoy this crazy ride!

I lost 90lbs. and that is ALL I lost (albeit I am happy for that) and I lost it in 7 months... we are all different. There are no comparisons.

you are doing fine...everyone's weightloss is different. I have ONLY lost 134 lbs and I am a little over 1 year out...but at 3 mths I was ONLY at 71 lbs. Don't forget you are working out and muscle weighs more than fat...so stop worrying about the scale...and enjoy your loss. :)

ONLY 70 pounds???? I lost 60 at 3 1/2 months and was very happy! With doing a lot of exercise, you are probably gaining some great muscle, hence why the scale might not move. Check your measurements. Don't get hung up on that stuff. Plateaus happen and then they naturally break. I hit a plateau usually every 2 weeks and it lasts a week or more. As long as my scale is headed in the right direction, I dont sweat it. Hang in there and just keep doing what you're doing!

Gloria you are doing great. I have lost 80 lbs and I am 6 months post op. Don't fret with platueas (sp?). Take them with a grain of salt. Use that time to continue to build muscle and get rid of the flab. When I hit a platuea, which August and Sept. I wast stuck at 185 - 190 I continued to do my workout and eat the right things and now I am 179. So I used my plateaus to my advantage because it gives your body a rest ground and you can build muscle. Hopefully won't need painful plastic surgery to fix it all. Best of Luck.
