Question:
Is it ok to eat campbells cream of chicken in the first week?

I'm 1 week post op and have started to eat cambells cream of chicken. It taste so good but is this bad for me at such an early time. I'm following the doctor's schedule but wanted to try this.    — evieyw (posted on February 12, 2003)

As long as you are on the full liquids phase and not clear liquids, it would be fine to have STRAINED cream soup. I used a bar strainer to do the straining of my soups early post-op. Best wishes to you during recovery :) - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -111lbs.

Hi Yvette, Congrats and good luck on your WLS journey! I think cream of chicken soup is fine. If you can keep it down, it's not a bad choice. I had a problem with chicken when I was first post-op, but if you don't, that's great! Post-op 1 year, down 90 lbs

I used the Soup At Hand cream of chicken to thin my pureed chicken and turkey - gave it a nice flavor and smoother consistancy. It's okay, as long as you aren't sodium sensitive. (Most canned soups are a little on the high side when it comes to sodium. Can be significant if youa re sensitive, as far as blood pressure is concerned.) As long as you aren't eating that all day, you should be fine. Best of luck!

Yvette, the main goal your first 2-3 weeks post-op is (1) to get used to your new tummy (2) too keep things down and (3) MOST IMPORTANTLY, STAY HYDRATED! Food doesn't mean much in the early stages, stay hydrated and just get used to eating, worry about your protein later! Good Luck!

I think it sounds good. I pureed a Chunky Campbell's soup (ham and bean, I think) when I was on pureed foods, and strained it. Sounds awful, but was much better than the pureed chicken I had (ugh) and not as monotonous as the cottage cheese and refried beans I was always eating.

Yvette, Yes!! My surgeon makes you stay on soft/liquids for 8 weeks. My "staple" was cream of chicken soup. It was so easy to "slurp" and tasted good. Infact, of all the foods I was able to eat/drink for those 8 weeks, thats the only one I will have again. I wish you all the best!!!!! 9 months post op open RNY, - 121 lbs!

You should talk to your doctor or dietician first before moving onto foods/liquids that are not a part of the program that they set up for you.
