Question:
Please explain my slow weight loss

Hi, im 4 months post-op on the 25th of June. I lost between 52lbs-55lbs so far, don't get me wrong im happy with that, but isn't that a bit to slow. I realize that im a slow loser because my starting weight was 260lbs. I drink my water, i walk 2 miles a day, i eat right. I do all the things im suppose to do. What is the reason for it being this slow. I have lost alot of inches though, just not alot of weight. I was wearing a size 22/24 now im wearing 14/16, so im happy about that.    — sexysag37 (posted on June 23, 2003)

Rita, I started out at 261, and am 5' tall. I had my surgery on 12/05/02. I have now lost 80 LBS. I too think I lost pretty slow..but the Dr says it is ok...I wasnt getting enough exercise in,,,but it sounds like you are doing all the right stuff...I will watch your responses and see if I can get a clue too!! Rita, Count your blessings. You are NOT a slow loser. I had open RNY on April 7th and have lost 48 lbs so far. I am 5'2 and started out at 235 lbs. I exercise like crazy doing 45 minutes on the elliptical machine at least 4-5 times per week, walk several evenings per week and also play tennis several times per week). I get at least an hour of exercise evry single day! Now I would consider myself to be a slow loser!

Ditto for me too! I am 90 days as of tomorrow and I am down 40lbs. It took 3 weeks to lose 3 lbs. I eat correctly, drink enough water, take my vitamins - and there are times I just want to jump on the scale to make sure it is working. I am 5'9" and started at 283. Light-weights definitely lose slower - but at least we are losing! I am the slowest loser of everyone in my support group. They all insist I am doing something wrong and every month the dietician jumps in and explains that not everyone will lose 50lbs in one month - or 3 months. Hang in there!!! At least from the posts we see here, we know that we are not alone.

Rita, you are gaining muscle as you lose fat, so the "weight loss" won't seem to be as fast as those who don't work out as much as you do. Okay? You are doing just fine! I am 18 months post op and down 210/220 lbs. You are doing great, just keep up the good work!

You are thinking about this all wrong. D not think about it in terms of total pounds lost, but rather as a percentage of you total body weight. I started at 420, lost 106 pounds by month 4 = 25% of my starting body weight. You have lost 21% of your total body weight . . . that is just about right. Change your way of thining when comparing yourself to others, use percentages and you will see everyone loses at about the same rate. . . .

Hi Rita, I just read your profile and you admit that you don't always do the right thing (remember the birthday party?) I think if you take a look at what you are eating(the bad stuff), you may find some of your answers right in front of you. Not that I am a believer in no bad stuff but when you want to move the scale, minimizing or eliminating the bad stuff is the first to go. Also, during the one week that you lost 4 pounds, you said it was confusing as you ate alot that week. Our journeys are not always smooth. Some weeks we lose more than other weeks, and there are the weeks when we plateau or even gain those few pounds temporarily. The best way I have found to keep the weight moving off is to eat frequently (choose good protein based foods and eat 6 times a day-the more you eat the better, actually), lower the carbs, keep the water above 64 oz, watch the calories and exercise (not walking without building up a sweat, but heart pumping exercise). I think even if you did none of the above you would continue to lose slowly but doing the above will help you to maximize your honeymoon period.

52-55lb in four weeks is wonderful. I am what you would call a slow loser. I am almost six weeks out, and have only lost 18 lbs. Whatever your doing must be working, keep up the good work.
