Question:
9 weeks post op, throwing up and

I'm calling my surgeon tomorrow about this but just wondering if anyone else has this experience. I seem to be dumping alot, so people say. I'm NOT eating carbs, I'm NOT eating sweets and I'm not eating excess fat. Matter of fact, I barely get a few bites down before I start feeling dry mouth, heart pounding and VERY sleepy. Tonight I ate a peice of salmon and promply had terrible pain at the opening of my pouch and threw up violently for 30 minutes. I realize this is not dumping, just wondering if a stricture might be forming as this happens often too. Any advice would be appreciated.    — Happy I. (posted on July 15, 2003)

Hi Lisa- are you chew-chew-chewing your food...to the consistency of soup? It's easy to forget, and the results are very painful. Also, are you drinking with your meals? YMMV but my doc says from day 1 no drinking for 1/2 hour before and after each meal or snack. I had the "heart attack" feeling I think you're describing a couple of times post op and each time I think it was due to not taking small enough bites and not chewing well enough. It was more common if I waited too long to eat. (And did the salmon by any chance have 1. a sweet sauce or 2. bones? These might contribute.) Good luck! You are smart to call your surgeon and check with her or him. Cheers- (Lap RNY 23-Jan-2003 246/173)

Whenever I have this problem it is also because I haven't taken small enough bites and/or chewed enough. But, you may also have a stricture. Do call your doc. (Open RNY 6-12-03)

Hello my husband Richard had the same thing happen at 6 weeks. The Dr. said as the pouch heals there is sometimes some scar tissue around the opening. So they did a Endoscopy and dialated him and now he has no problems at all. It was a breeze he said. His RNY was May 8, 2003 and has lost 55lbs. Don't be afraid to ask your Dr. and be persistent. Take Care, Rhonda
