Question:
I want to know did anyone who started out @ 5'3 245lbs what did you lose

a month? I had my surgery 6/30/03 and so far have lost 32lbs. Which I am happy about. I couldn't of done it before surgery. But the weight planner calender on this web site said I should have lost 45lbs by 8 weeks. So I'm 13lbs slower. I take my vitamins, drink between 64-100oz of water a day. I only drink water(nothing else) I eat 3x a day without snacking usually a soy/veggie burger(no bun) w/low fat cheese slice or 1 egg omlet for breakfast. Lunch I'll have a salad/or chicken salad. Dinner I'll eat fish, chicken, or soy/veggie burger. As far as exercise I walk on average 2 miles every 3-4 days a week. I would like to hear from others who have had the same stats and got down to at least 145lbs. And how long it took them to get there and what all they did. Thanks so much everyone! Take care, Audrey    — Audrey W. (posted on August 29, 2003)

I can sympathise with you. I had surgery on 6/12 and as of yesterday - 11 weeks post op - I'm down 45 pounds. The only thing I noticed about your menu is that you are eating only 3 times a day and I don't see how you are getting all of your protein in unless you are doing shakes. My surgeon/dietician recommended 6 small meals a day in order to get the protein in with food (although I still eat a protein bar in the morning for breakfast for). Have you tracked your eating on fitday.com or a similar site to make sure you are getting enough calories? If you eat too few calories, that will slow the weightloss. Good Luck.

Hi Audrey, I started at 253 and 5'3". Today jsut a few days shy of 6 months I am down 85lbs. First month loss 31. At 2 months was at a 50lb loss. Third month a loss of 64lbs. Fourth month a los of 70. Fifth month a loss of 78 and currently sitting at about 85lb (bouncing a few lbs). the first few months I reallly struggled with proten. My surgeon prefers you do not supplement your protein. THeir program emphasizes getting your protein in food. My labs are fine. So dont worry . Look at your inches lost (if you havent measured do so now) MY inches fall constantly. I am curretnly 168lbs and can wear between a 10-14 on the bottom and on the top I am a small. Now that is amazing as I never was a small. JUST do your best protein, water, vitamins and exercise. Good luck

Hi Audrey! I started out close to where you did - 5'2" and 235. In 3 months I have lost 55 pounds. To my way of thinking, it was not enough! A friend of mine, who also had RNY, lost 90 pounds in 3 months. I just knew there was something wrong with me! But my friend weighed 390 when she started and I had a lot less to lose in the first place. I am learning from these boards that people with less to lose will lose it slower (typically - not always). You are doing great - 32 pounds gone in just 2 months! That's over 15 pounds a month! Just keep doing what you're doing - making sure you get your protein, exercise, water and vitamins. And remember that we all lose at different rates. At least you are losing! Congratulations and good luck to you!

Hi, I am 5'2 and started at 212lbs. It's been almost 13 months and I now weigh 110.5 lbs. I eat no bread, rice, pasta, crackers, etc. However I just tried corn bread and a hush puppy the other day and did just fine but won't make it a habit. I still throw up if the food doesn't agree with me and still have dumping if I eat high fatty foods or too much sugar. I have always eaten at least 4 meals a day. I also exercise. Good luck. 212/110.5/105

Hi - I was 5'3-1/2" (don't forget the 1/2!) and weighed 250. I am 6 months out and have lost a total of 90 lbs. Check out my profile - it has my progression chart. :o)

Audrey, check out the bottom of my profile for a month by month loss through 18 mo post-op. I started at 5'3" and 249, so we are very close. My goal was 145 too and I am just 3 pounds shy of it and very happy where I am at. Keep in mind though that we all lose differently and at different rates, even when starting at the same height/weight. The good part is that if you stay honest and follow the rules, you do get there. Two things I would suggest to get the weight loss moving even more-your exercise should be heart pumping cardio which burns calories. Walking, while good for you, does not achieve the burn. And eat more often. Your body needs fuel to burn and if you are only feeding it 3 times a day it is not enough. I still eat every few hours and I know many who do it the same way. Try just a few ounces of mostly protein based foods every few hours. Good food choices so far, and congrats on getting in all your water!

I went from 278 to 140 in 14 months, and have lost about 5 more pounds since then. Good luck - sounds like you are working hard. It will continue to pay off, believe me.

What percentage of excess weight did you put in to lose. I put my stuff in and if I put in 100% I am 40 lbs over where I should be, yet I know that losing 159 lbs in under 7 months is way ahead of many people, so the chart doesn't mean garbage. If I put in 80% lost then I am exactly where I should be and 85% is 10 lbs over. So it comes down to what you put in. If it's unrealistic then you will get back unrealistic numbers.

Hi Audrey, I am one year post op today and 5 pounds below my doctor's goal for me (160#'s) I started at 256 on the day of surgery. I never lost 20#'s a month, just lost at a steady pace until I hit about 165 #'s at about 10 months. Since then it has been slow. Good luck, you are doing just fine.

Hi, I had similar stats to you...255lbs at 5'4" when I had WLS in April of last year...let me put it for you suscintly....It took me 3 months to lose 50lbs and 1 year to lose another 50...I am just now at 145lbs., in a size 8, which was my goal. I thought it would NEVER happen, but it DID!

It may seem like you are losing slow, but you're not. I thought the same thing early on. I started out at 5'2" and 234lbs, I am now 6 1/2 months post-op weighing 149lbs., down a total of 85lbs. I am only 19lbs. from my doctors goal. You'll lose the weight, don't worry. You can use my progess as a guide, at the bottom of my profile is a record of my weight lose. Good luck!!

I started out at 5'2 and 248 pounds. I lost approximately 50 pounds in 9 weeks. However, I had NO appetite and I wasn't eating. I was sicker then a dog. Once I was able to eat more, the weight loss slowed down considerably. It took me about 10 months to get to my goal of 125 pounds.
