Question:
Is there such a thing as late or early dumping?

I read about this somewhere: that there is something called "late" and "early" dumping, that have different symptoms and different effects on the body. Has anyone else heard of this and, if so, please describe. I ate a bit of pasta and half a dozen Tootsie Rolls yesterday (yes, out of th ordinary for me but I couldn't stop the Tootsie Rolls, they were soooo god and calling my name!) About an hour after I ate them, I started sweating and shaking like crazy. I felt a little weak but not sick. Is this "late" dumping? Thanks! BTW, I posted this question yesterday but screwed up the way the question was worded and the question didn't show up the way I intended it to --sorry! — lizinPA (posted on September 30, 2003)

Yes, there is early and late dumping - best place to go to look about it is http://www.sabariatric.com/ (although if you do a search on Yahoo about "early dumping" or "late dumping" you will find a lot of sites.
Early dumping is attributable to the rapid movement of foods (high sugar and/or high-fat) through the pouch into the intestines. This can cause extra fluid to be drawn from the body into the bowels.
Late dumping is the hypoglycemic reaction from the insulin that the pancreas dumps into the system in response to the sugar hitting the intestines. The body overreacts and produces too much insulin for the true amount of sugar and this causes the hypoglycemic attack. What you had sounds like the late dumping...JR
