Yes. I was diagnosed with esophageal spams. If they're intermittent, they actually have to look at your esophagus while it's happening to diagnose it definitively. It's the worst pain I've ever had. Personally, I think this is an undiagnosed WLS complication because I've heard of others that developed it after surgery.

I had this happen to me only one time. That was more then enough pain for me. A few weeks ago I had the worst pains in my life only lasting about 15 minutes. I called my doctor immediately; before he had called me back the pain had subsided completely. He had told me that he thought it was esophageal spasms. He had mentioned also that if it continued that they would need to do further testing such as a scope to see if there was narrowing in my esophagus. Fortunately the pain has never returned thank God. Wish you luck Jen :)

Does it happen right after you eat? A couple of times, mostly during the first year, I either ate too much or too fast and I also had the worst pouch pain. It would neither move up and out or down and thru. It would take hours of sweating and pain for it to resolve.

You may want to be checked for gallstones...I had to have my gb removed it felt like I was having a heart attach and it would last hours b/c I had gall stones.

Good luck at getting ANYTHING tested while you are in pain. I just suffer it. I've been to the ER several times. You bust your buns to get there, they slap an IV in you and shove you in a room for 1.5 to 3 hours before anyone will come in and see you. It makes NO DIFFERENCE if it is a busy or slow night... in goes the IV and you wait for several hours. By then the pain is over and there is nothing to test for. I don't even bother going anymore. The pain is so bad my 20 gauge to the head sounds like the best solution to me. I've been through 15 surgeries and I'm no stranger to pain, but when I get these, from a 1-10, it is a definate 10. I don't go to my surgeons hospital as it is around 50 miles away and lots of city driving. But one of the local doctors I've seen thinks it is esphopical spasams. Whatever it is, it is 3 times as bad as the gallbladder attacks I had before it's removal. Most of the time I'm happy I had WLS, but little by little from all the minor complications over the last 3.5 years I'm beginning to deeply regret wls. Between the spasams (or whatever they are) to the current possible ulcer pains, I've about had all I can take. I sure hope that you have better luck resolving your pains than I have mine. I only have one person in the world who would give a bleep if I'm gone. When she is, I'm not going through anymore pain. The minor complications of wls, for me, just is'nt ending and I'm getting no relief from the medical profession. Between the pain and the never ending fatique... I'm whiped out. Please keep trying to find answers. You may be fortunate enough to find them. :)
