Question:
Has anyone bleached their teeth post-op?

Has anyone bleached their teeth using bleaching trays (given by the dentist) post-op? Can this damage your pouch? I know that you do swollow a certain amount of the bleach as you sleep.    — Melissa D. (posted on August 13, 2001)

I'm almost 8 months postop and started the bleaching process 2 weeks ago. My dentist is aware that I had the RNY surgery and it wasn't an issue. The amount of bleaching gel that we use is so minimal and any that we did swallow would be diluted with saliva. I haven't given it a second thought.

Hello: I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and have had several patients who are post-op have their teeth bleached. The residual amount swallowed is minimal and does not cause any harm to the pouch according to my Dentist. After losing all that weight why wouldn't anyone want to have "Pearly Whites"? If you are considering, I say GO FOR IT!! Ciao :)

Just wanted to add a thought to what you said in your question...Be sure to check with your dentist about bleaching your teeth while you sleep. Mine recommended against it. He felt that it would be on your teeth too long and also irritate your gums. He had me bleach mine for about an hour or two during the day when I was awake. Just a thought...
