Question:
Ok, I am just past 6 months and the post-surgery nail splitting ...(more)

is here and driving me insane! I mean painful splitting, and peeling below the nail bed, and I have bandaids, and I went to the maniucurist, and I use the No-More Peeling (helps a little), but it looks like another 2 weeks before it grows out to the hopefully normal nails. Dr. Gagner said it was normal when I saw him. Anyone else have any ideas? Its just so painful, I always had normal length nails, this is just so upsetting and looks so ugly!!    — Missy J. I had not heard of this post-op nail splitting. I am almost 6 mos. out and have the same problem you do! Three out of ten. I keep polish and finish on my nails and it still happens. I can be doing something simple like-folding a towel or putting shoes on when it happens! I will check back to see replies.

I am only 5 weeks post-op and so far my finger nails are growing and are as strong as they have ever been. From what I understand, if you aren't getting enough protien your nails will suffer and your hair will fall out, at least to some degree. And, after reading lots of other posts, it seems as if the longer you are post-op, the more variety you have in your diet and maybe you tend not to focus on getting your protien in as much as you did at first. This, is of course, just an observation! But, it wouldn't hurt for you to re-examine what you are eating and make sure you are getting enough protien in. You may think you are, but obviously, your body is lacking some key nutrient, or your nails wouldn't be splitting so badly. I have also heard other posts comment about a protien supplement as if there is a pill available. You could look into that. I know if I begin to exhibit severe nail splitting or excessive hair lose, I will examine my diet first and take steps to consume more protien. I hope you find a solution quickly.

I'm six months post-op as well and am having the same problem. I've been using Sally Hanson's Maximum Growth Formula but with minimal results. By the way, my surgeon confirms that my protein intake is more than adequate as evidenced by my blood work.

You can try Nail Envy by OPI, (expensive, but, under normal circumstanses, works well.)It will not work overnight, Available at a good salon. Remember too that there may be no hardener/fortifier for nails that will work until we get it from the inside out. Good luck,, marie, manicurist 16 + years.

I am 8 mos out. I can tell you that basically nothing helps. You just have to ride it out. I see that alot of people keep saying up the protein. Well I have at least 90 grams of protein per day and I take my vitamins faithfully. To date I have lost 127lbs. Almost 3/4 of my hair and all my long nails. I hve trouble keeping any nails they are to brittle. I get b-12 shots and take additional B vitamins and Zinc. So basically you just have to wait. Hope this helps.

There is the protein issue, yes, and then the fat solubles, A, D, & E, which need to be taken in dry form. A shortage in any one of those can leave you with nasty nails. I looked in my book to see if I could find something more specific, but unfortunately, damaged nails is indicative of about anything you want! LOL! WE just know that we are susceptible to shortages in protein, iron,. calcium,. A, D, E, zinc & B12. Even if we supp, we must supp correctly. And water. Water feed every single cell in us, so short the water and "something" will have to do without and the body picks WHAT. I got mushy nails at 4 months. I think they felt sorry for my falling hair!
