Dear Alondra: I have suffered severe obstructive sleep apnea for about 5 years.. it took me some time to get used to my CPAP, but it makes a world of difference. Pleaase talk to your respitory therapist, pulmonologist or whoever 'fit' you for your machine about a less restrictive mask. There are many different kinds and it sounds to me like your current apparatus isn't right for your needs. Please please take it from one who has been there, that getting good sleep makes all the difference in the world in how you face things. For the anxiety and other things, I hope you have someone to talk to.. a priest of pastor, a counselor or a therapist.. there is no shame is seeking help, especially when seeking life changing WLS. You CAN do this Alondra.. just keep telling yourself that this is for the rest of your life.. a healthier life that you deserve to have! I'll be praying for you! ~Peace

I can relate to many of your concerns. They can/will give you something to calm down before surgery. I don't know how much time you have to prepare before you have surgery, but perhaps you could learn a relaxation technic before you go in. I would talk to your sleep specialist about your problems with CPAP. They could modify your mask. I didn't like my mask either for a month or so, but I eventually got used to it...for the most part. I was 475 pounds and they didn't even use my CPAP during or after surgery. Even for month after I slept in my recliner and didn't use it. I've gradually gotten back into bed to sleep and I do have to use my CPAP in bed. Anxiety attacks are difficult. I've had a few but I didn't regarding surgery. I was nervous. I think you've got to consult your Dr.'s regarding your anxiety. I would say make sure you tell them that it's more than "just nerves" and that you need some special consideration for that. They have many medications and technics they can use to counter that if they know ahead of time. Maybe they could make it so you don't see the operation room or at least remember it. I was also concerned about surgery because of my size, but know I am amazed at how good of a job my surgeon did and how quickly I was able to heal. I was walking less than a day after and walked up my stairs 4 days after. You can do it with the help of your medical team....let them know. Ultimately they want to help you.

I agree with the posts below about trying different types of CPAP masks. It can make a tremendous difference. Your respiratory system needs to be in the best shape it can be in for your surgery. Also, make sure they schedule you to be in ICU the first night so you can be closely monitored. My best friend, Ginger Brewster, died after having the surgery because these things were not done and her sleep apnea was IGNORED. If you'd like you can read her story on the memorial page of this website. If your sleep apnea is taken seriously by your surgeon and properly dealt with you will be fine.
