Question:
I am missing the good ole days of Crusty breads....anyone else miss the

the pizza crusts, the bread machine breads, the garlic rolls in an Italian restaurant? Is there hope down the road that these won't be off limits forever?    — Kay S. (posted on August 31, 2002)

The crust was really the only thing that I could manage of bread for the first several months. I was eating the french bread crusts of my kids for a long time.. The gummy part was always my problem. Now I can do a little bit of it all.

I can do breads NOW. I approach with caution. Too much gives me a carb dump (like sugar). Too stupid & I'm blocked. I'm glad I have the safeguards, because my weakness pre-op was "anything butter would melt on", most particularly hot bread. I don't think we need to abandon breads entirely, but um, my former use was not reasonable. LOL! Today, I have bread with certain foods. End of story. I'm no longer fighting it for control of me.

I can eat anything. Bread is great, but it fills me up fast. But I am a year out, its very different at one month. More than likely you will eat anything just like pre op, but the quantities will be what other thin folks eat. I must admit I occasionally eat some raw dough out of the breead machine while its rising. I worried so about not being to eat as a post op. What a lot of wasted worry! Ruined nearly a year of my life fretting over everything...

Hi, I can eat small amts of bread at 11 weeks out. I limit the amt to 1-2 bites because I need the room for protien foods. The great thing is that I am satisfied with 1 bite and do not feel as if I am missing anything.

Remember, your mind will not change overnight. There is still much head work to do. The wanting and missing are very normal. Each person is different in what they can and can't tolerate. Most people in my support group say that they can't eat bread, if just fills them up to fast. I eat bread almost everyday. I don't eat all the kinds that you listed but I can eat bread without problem. I usually eat a sandwich or salad for lunch. I use a good rye bread looking for fiber. I sometimes will purchase a loaf of good french bread and eat that. I can still enjoy the bread at a restaurant but don't eat anywhere what I use too. I leave room for the meal. I have very little desire for the other things that you listed, Pizza I can take or leave. You will find that as you loose more weight that your taste buds will change and many of the things that you use to love to eat just won't interest you. Some of that is from the part that is 'I love my new body and my new energy and having the ability to do things'. It also is a great kicker to hear someone say, 'you look great'. Believe me, those are great motivators. So is shopping at the thrift store and buying $5.00 dresses. I still crave even after 3 years, but I choose my craving food carefully. This is not an overnight fix but I watch my scale and I read my labels. I have become hypoglycemic so I really read sugar content but I have even found a no sugar added Ice cream with only 8 gr of sugar but you know it has been in the freezer for 6 days and I have only had 2 small dishes. I choose a oatmeal raisin cookie over a gooey donut, or rich cake with frosting. And I think this is what it is all about. learning to eat in moderation and eat healthy. Normal eating doesn't mean you can't have something ever again. It is learning that when I go to a restaurant about 3 times a year and they have my all time favorite 'New York Cheese Cake'. I treat myself. It may take me all day to eat my one piece but about 3 times a year is ok. And I don't buy a whole cheese cake anymore, I treat myself to one piece. Hope this helps

Heavy sigh......I have to agree with Virginia on this one, anything "gummy" and forget it. I do my best with crackers. I'd love to have 1/2 of a 1/2 of a sandwich even and have it agree with me! Even toasted, bread is not my friend. And believe me, I feel for you with the bread machine issue...I'm making my boyfriend a loaf of Hawaiian sweet bread in my bread machine today....the smell will be enough to kill me! But he's been quite good to me post-op so I'll treat him once in awhile. Garlic cheese bread is another one I long for after going to a lovely Italian restaurant out of town last week. Hmmph! Really heavy sigh on that one! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -58lbs.(which makes missing this stuff all worthwhile!) :)

I eat breads now...I even can get down one slice of pizza when the family has pizza for dinner. At one month post op, I couldn't...but at 9.5 months post, I can...and it's great...because I can eat that one slice of pizza and be happy and satisfied...it used to take an entire medium to make me happy and satisfied. :0) Have a Sparkling Day and good luck ~CAE~

Yes, you should be able to eat all of that again someday. But like the other posters have said, your tastes do change. I used to love pizza and now each time I have it, I eat a few bites and think, this is so greasy tasting. At dinner, when I go out to eat, I avoid the bread-not because I don't love it, but because I know if I eat it, I won't have room for the meat and vegetable. I do have bread almost every day for lunch- 1/2 a sandwich. My tastes for warm bread with butter have not gone away and I can eat it if I choose to. BTW, margarine on toasted cinnamon bread is great!

I find that by the time I chew up the bread the way I am supposed to...it is just plain nasty. Nothing but gummy tasing dough! It feels like a big lump in my stomach. I used to LOVE bread. At a preop dinner, I would have 3 bites of chicken and 6 pieces of bread! It was definitely my downfall. I am only 6 weeks postop, and I have tried bread of different types on 4 or 5 occassions...and it just isnt worth it. The idea of it is better than the taste. Good luck!

Boy, do I ever miss the bread!!! I am such a carb addict, and will be for the rest of my life. I'd love to have a PB&J with a glass of milk (one of my favorites pre-op) or deli meats and cheese on wheat!! Garlic rolls with spaghetti! Unfortunately, none of this agrees with me anymore. We ordered pizza the other day and I ate the toppings off one piece and about half the crust off the one piece and was satisfied. I really like that feeling!!! Cravings are fairly easily satisfied, and that's a real post-op experience. Missing the bread is not the hardest thing I've had to get used to. I miss going to a restaurant and really chowing down- ordering a burger and fries or a Greek, Italian, or Mexican meal and eating the whole thing. Ahh!!!! Would I go back and change having the surgery? No way! I'm off the meds, have no back pain any longer, have more endurance, and look better. Not being to eat myself silly is a small price to pay....but I can't help waxing nostalgic once in a while. Good luck! I've been told that this, too shall pass.
