Question:
A comment about hairstyles and thining hair...

there are alot of questions about hair and what to do with it when it starts to fall out, but this comment isn't about that. this is about hairstyles. i'm a hairstylist and even thou i am so very very proud of everyone's before and after pics i go nuts when i see the hairstyles. so i made a quick hairstyle check list.(friends this is meant with alot of love!) *******WHEN IS IT TIME FOR A NEW STYLE******* 1. if you have to take an old expired driver's license from 15 years ago to show how you what your hair done... 2. if you don't see ANYONE with your hairstyle in a magazine, on tv or even in the grocery store ect... 3. if you have to bring in a pic from high school and you graduated 10 years ago. 4. if you have had the same style for more than 5 years. keeping your hair up to date doesn't mean you have to have brightly colored funky hair. keeping the same out of date style makes you look older and not pulled together. i love you guys and think of you as good friends...so that is why i had to comment...just think of me as the friend who will let you know you have lettuce in your teeth!    — franbvan (posted on June 1, 2003)

This is so funny to me because this past week I went and cut off all my hair. It was half way down my back all one length except for bangs. Not because I love long hair but because I have 4 sons and never have time to get it done so I let it grow and cut the bangs!!! Well now my hair is soooooo cute it is not even to my shoulders! It has been one of the best things I have done!!! What made me do this is that my bangs started to fall out and I needed it layered to help blend and now you can't even tell my hair is so thin!!! GREAT ADVICE!!!!

Fran you are so right. I have changed my color and style 3 time since my surgery on 10/22/02. As I get smaller I want to look younger, hard to do at 54, but change is what I need. It makes me sad to see the girls who hide behind too long hair. We need to see the new you, not all that hair.

Fran, you definately are right! I had pretty long hair prior to surgery and I got mine cut maybe 5 or 6 months out I think because of all the hair I lost. Although I like my new "do" much better than my old one, I still want more change. My hair has always been a pretty blonde but over the past couple of years it has gotten darker and I no longer like my natural color. It's so drab now. And my new cut, although better than my old one is sort of "plain Jane" Do you have any suggestions for me? Or perhaps you could just come to Colorado and give me a makeover?? HA HA! HELP, oh by the way, my obstacles are very dirty blonde color, naturally curly, baby fine, and still pretty thin, although I am seeing a lot of new growth. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, just wanted to suggest that if your cutting really long hair consider donating your ponytail to Locks of Love, they make wigs for sick children. The hair needs to be 10 inches long. The website is www.locksoflove.org I have donated twice already and I'm half way to my third donation.

Sarah, this was my second time donating hair to www.locksoflove.org! It makes it much easier to cut it off knowing it is going to be made into wigs for children!!!

Laurel, go to the salon and get higlights! Even if you've gone 'dirty' blonde...I think you would be amazed at how much some highlights will brighten you up. I just went and got my past shoulder length, coarse semi-curly hair cut this weekend. I went in and said, I'm losing my hair in a hurry, I want it all cut off, and don't have a clue what I want...do what ever you think will be best. Then about half way through my cut, we got talking about color and I told the stylist that I had tried different all over color and highlights before, but usually only in red (my hair is dark brown with lots of red undertones) but that I usually end up 'too' red and have a hard time wearing make-up with it. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, the stylist suggested carmely-blonde, chunky highlights...and even though I couldn't possibly imagine how blondish highlights would look in my dark hair...I went for it and absolutely love it! I look at least 5 years younger (I'm only 30). Of course, by the time it was all said and done it cost me $125 dolars...but it was sooooo worth it! If your looking for a new 'do' all I can say is go with the best you can afford...you won't be sorry that way!

Fran, you've been reading my mind! I'm a stylist too and sometimes the hair I see on people is just frightening! I recently talked a fellow WLSer into updating her 1980's MULLET into a short. flippy style with highlights. Now, to just get her to get out of the 'feathering' habit! Oy! If you have a new body, you need to update EVERYTHING! Clothes, hair, makeup, etc. WE DESERVE TO LOOK GOOD!!
