Question:
Could I have hit a plateau at 5 weeks post-op?

I am 5 weeks post-op and have only lost 17 pounds. I am getting in protein at 50 grams a day. I am still following my nutritionists orders on eating. Is WLS not working for me? Or am I just a very slow loser?    — Teresa S. (posted on August 7, 2003)

I hit my first plateau at two weeks out and it lasted three weeks. I hit about one a month now. Right now I haven't lost any weight for about three weeks.

Some of us are just chronically slow losers. So much depends on age, gender, previous dieting history, hormones, etc... I was 54 years old at the time of my surgery over three years ago. I hit my first plateau at three weeks, and experienced one at least once a month. However, I had reached my goal weight by 14 months and have maintained it ever since. Don't give up on the surgery....as long as you are following the "rules" of adequate protein, lots of water, daily exercise, and no junk foods, the surgery will not fail you! My best advice is to put the scales in the closet and focus on the rapid changes that you will see in the size of your clothes. Weighing daily...or even several times a day...in the beginning just made me a crazy person. Concentrate on how much better you are feeling and how rapidly you are cleaning out your closet instead. Best wishes!

I seem to hit plateaus about every 10 pounds. It is maddening. But I've found that I can shorten their duration by upping my protein, water and exercise and eating almost no carbs. So far that has worked well for me.

I have consistantly hit a plateau about every 10 to 15 pounds. If I exercise more and increase my water and protein intake they are shorter but I really think that it is my bodys way of saying whoa, not too fast. It is very frustrating though. Hang in there, it will come off eventually. It didn't come on over night.
