Question:
After so much weight loss, do you feel your bones are sticking out?

I am 14 months post op and down to goal weight (142 lbs, started at 269). I had a baby 2 months ago, so I am really noticing these things now. My hip bones seem to big for me now and they stick out. When I wear like low riding jeans, they actually make my hip bones soar. I also feel my ribs so much when I lay down. Is this just because my bones were bigger to compensate for the weight or is it just that I notice it because I am thinner?    — emilyfink (posted on August 31, 2003)

I am only a little over 4 months post-op. I started at 232lbs, and I'm at 158. I notice my bones and ribs sticking out already. I went to the chiropractor the other day, and he said wow you don't need to lose more weight. Your bones are really sticking out. There is no meat on your bones. I smiled from ear to ear. I don't think anyone has ever told me that! I lay down and my ribs stick up instead of my belly... Enjoy it. I think of it, when I feel my bones, as a feeling of real accomplishment! I thought I was made up of fat and skin. I haven't felt bones in years!!! Congrats on the new baby and your weight loss!

Mine aren't sticking out yet but I definitely can find my hip bones very easily now. As a matter of fact they seem way too high. LOL <p>I wonder if the heightened noticeability of the ribs and hip bones has anything to do with just having the baby. Who knows what all changes when we carry a baby for 9 months. Just realize it is confirming that you have done what you were supposed to and instead of having lots of fat to feel you can find your bones. I know are bones get denser when it is carrying all the weight but I don't know if they actually get bigger. I'm guessing not because being as how I carried a LOT of weight I would have a huge frame and technically I am a medium frame. Enjoy your new found body and your new baby! Congrats on both!

I am loving it. I am 6 1/2 months out, and I feel my hips, tailbone and ribs. My collarbones have been showing for a few months. My husband tells me he feels my shoulderblades and ribs along my back!!! I am fairly large framed, still wearing a 38D bra at 158 lbs.. I only went down 1 bra size in all this time and losing 90 pounds. I kinda like seeing them as it causes me no discomfort except for sitting on the tailbone, and since I will never appear petite, it helps give the appearance of being thinner at least til this extra skin on my stomach is removed next year. I could think of worse things to deal with!!!

Interesting reading the comments back. I'm only a few weeks post-op and looking forward to the bone thing (ESPECIALLY collar). It sounds like bones that are 'exposed' all along (average thin person) gain some tollerance for being bumped and hit but our bones which have had SIGNIFICANT padding, are weak little babies. Perhaps they will get stronger after awhile. 6 months is not a long time to be thinner. I am only down 30 lbs but noticed last night I had the hardest time bringing the 16 lb kitty litter bag up the stairs. It was soooooo heavy when only 30 days ago, I was carrying two of those all over my body. ...things that make you go "hmmmm".

Emily, i think we all go through this stage in our journey cuz we were never use to having bones or seeing them..I to feel my neck bone all the time and i hate it but noone else notices it more then i do, my husband just made the comment to me just a few minutes ago that im getting too thin and i so now im looking at my body and noticing my bones sticking out and thinking lol ya and the problem is? I can see my bones and not my fat YESSS thats a plus! however, we must be carefull to not lose to much weight...we want to be healthy thats our main reason for losing in the first place...congrats on your new baby and im sure u look fine...btw i have some hip huggers too i love them!!

I know I seem to be getting bruises a lot, especially my shoulders. My ribs hurt sometimes too, like when lying down. Interesting what pops up when fat disappears.

Yes, my bones do seem to stick out more. Hip bones, bones on my chest (upper rib cage), collar bones, knee bones! especially at night when they bang together. It's odd though, because I still have some fat around my middle and upper back, so how can I be boney AND fat? Weird.

Hi, its Emily. Thanks so much for all for the comments. Yeah, it seems like something I just have to get used to. Maybe my bones are just a little sensitive for the time being. But, I played lacrosse in college just 5 years ago at 190 pounds and had two natural childbirths so I should be able to handle it, right? :)

My bones stick out way more then before surgery. I guess they had so much fat covering them before, I didn't even realize that I HAD bones!!
