Question:
Is it normal to have a plateau at 10 weeks?

I had one around weeks 4-5. Now it seems that I am having another one. I did not lose anything for 1 1/2 weeks the friday i was down 2 pounds. Now today nothing from over the weekend. Is it normal at this stage? I will be 12 weeks post op on October 1st and am down 49 pounds. I have not been doing anything different. But a few days I ate almost 900 calories. Could this be the problem?    — Stacie B. (posted on September 22, 2003)

I Stacy well first of all congrats on your loss! Everyone tends to lose at different paces, and as for plateaus yes that is normal to have one, I have had many of them so far and I am 8 mths post op. Our body needs to have them so we can adjust to the fast weight loss. First of all I will tell you to get rid of your scale cuz I was weighing myself constantly in the beginning and it was driving me crazy because one week I would lose a pound or two then for two weeks nothing at all! So I got rid of mine and just weighed myself at the docs office and I tell ya it has got so much better that way so now if I tend to hit a plateau I don't get too discouraged anymore cuz I don't know exactly what I weigh all of the time! So, do please try that first then also ppl have mentioned to me try to uptake your liquids especially water when you hit a plateau, and try to watch what you eat like stay away from carbs or don't overdoit on them, and I think I was eating around 800-900 cal to at that stage just make sure you get in your 3-4 small meals a day and of course protein which was very hard for me to do! Good Luck to you!

Stacie, my doctor says that plateaus are completely normal at many stages after the surgery. As he explained it to me, when you loose a ton of weight very quickly your body will sometimes stop loosing pounds but will loose inches instead...it kinda catches up with the pounds you've just lost. I am 4 1/2 months post op and have had 4 plateaus, none of them lasted more than eight days, and EVERY time I lost inches during that time. Don't worry, you're doing great. ~Open RNY 5/9/2003 -93 pounds!

Plateaus at any point - are normal. They vary in length of time. If you are sticking to the diet program, it will break eventually. Sometimes your body needs to adjust and catch up. Drink your fluids. I plateau 3 weeks out of every month. I am going into month 6, and I have gotten used to losing only 1 week a month. Congrats on your loss!!! Best regards -

First, let me encourage you to quit weighing so frequently. You will drive yourself nuts. I weighed at 12 days post-op (when I had my staples removed) and then not again til I was 10 weeks out. After that, my surgeon didn't want me to weigh for six months or at least, only once a month at support group meetings. I followed his guidelines and only weighed when I was in his office (I saw him some for other problems) or at meetings. I never knew if I hit a plateau or not because I wasn't weighing frequently. I did have a 2 month plateau at 6 monghs. Also, at 10 weeks, my surgeon told me that I had to up my calories to 1000-1200 or I wouldn't lose. I was eating about 500 a day then. I did as he suggested and at 6 months, I had lost 120 pounds.
