Question:
Number of bathroom trips

I am 23 months P/O down 120+ pounds (thank you very much). My question is for any one else who drinks large quantities. When I track what I drink I am consuming between 150-180 oz of fluids a day and I have to go to the bathroom alot. I have been told by a specialist that no should have to go more than every hour and a half, but the bladder only holds on average 12 oz, that doesn't add up to me. If you consume that quantity can you wait that long? I'd love to hear how long you can go.    — Penny D. (posted on June 10, 2004)

One thing to consider is that there is much less food in your system to absorb all that fluid (and presumably less solid waste exiting), so the fluids are processed more quickly out through the bladder.

That seems like a large amount of fluids to me. Anyhow, you have to consider the fact that you are not going to expell all of the fluids you take in. Some will be used by your body and you will lose some in sweat.

I drink about 80 oz a day...and go about every 2 hours while awake and then 1 time during the night, without fail.

HeLLO. I will answer your question. I drink 2 gallons water a day Over 240 ounces. That does not include if I drink anything else. I rarely do but sometimes. ANYHOW I would say I go to thje bathroom 2 times an hour sometimes 3. And it is always clear. To me more is better than less on water! Your doing great!

Just a side note...I'm an ultrasound technologist and had to do lots of exams requiring the patient to have a full bladder. The average normal bladder holds approximately 350 cc's of fluid. I also have a history of having more kidney stones than I can count. I know that a normal, healthy person should produce at least 30cc's urine per hour even if they are not eating or drinking anything at all. I believe if you're drinking that much water you're pretty lucky to not have a permanent seat on the commmode or have to wear a catheter. I go at least 2-3 times per hour after drinking a lot of fluids.

Penny, you're one of the lucky ones - you can drink and eliminate it. If you did not eliminate it, I would say you had a problem and most of us "forget" to drink a lot. I drink as much as I can when not travelling - my doctor says WOW you drink a lot, but he never said stop or it was not normal.

Do you drink this level of water purposefully or because you are that thirsty. If you are truely that thirsty you might want to consult an Endocrinologist. I once had a patient drinking that amount of fluids due to excessive thirst. When I brought it up to the doctor who was not aware of the real total amount, they did testing and found diabetes insipidus, which is NOT the same as the regular diabetes we are all familiar with, it is an endocrine disorder.
