Question:
Female question--is there anything out there other than Tylenol that a postop can

have for killer menstrual cramps??? NSAIDS are obviously out of the question for me since Iam postop and Tylenol does absolutely zip for me. Heating pad does help, but very little. Have any of you ladies noticed this too since your surgery? I gotta admit, at least Im regular now, but the cramps and bleeding are awful. Thanks!    — Kris T. (posted on June 21, 2004)

are you taking or have you considered taking birth control pills? that is the main reason i started taking them over 10 years ago, my cramps had me doubled over i could barely move. taking the pill helped tremendously, although i still get cramps but not nearly as bad as they once were. it has many benefits besides the main one people think of. just a thought.

Don't know if it will help any more than Tylenol, but my doctor said I could take up to 800 mg of Ibuprofen a day.

One of the first questions I asked my surgeon was whether I could take Vioxx 25mg once in awhile. He said it was fine, as long as I took it with some food. Personally, I literally could not function if I couldn't take my Vioxx for about 3 days every month. Tylenol does nothing for me, and I would have to take ibuprofen every four hours, but one Vioxx every 24 hours for three days keeps the pain away completely! Ask your surgeon - I don't think taking daily NSAIDs is good, but a few days per month shouldn't hurt.

How can I put this in polite company? Sex, in a satisfying way for ME. Know what I mean? LOL. Also, meditation can help...<br><br> Short of getting Vioxx prescribed (insurance RARELY COVERS THIS), I haven't heard of anything else that really works. I have already taken loads of Tylenol for migraines, and probably trashed my liver, so it does nothing for me at this point.

Maybe some pharmacy plans don't cover Vioxx, but mine does -currently with NO CO-PAY! (Self-insured system with a good deal with the supplier at the moment for this and several other drugs). I don't think anyone can generalize about what is and isn't covered by insurance; everyone needs to check their own plan.

My doctor gave me a list and Vioxx was a no-no. I had to get off it after being on it for years for my back arthritis.

How about Midrin? Vioxx is BAD!!! Works like a charm but causes LOTS of fluid retention! Beware.

Hot water bottle and exercise helps a lot! I love my HWB during that time. I agree with the others on Vioxx, My Dad died from the result of taking that drug.

Have you tried Midol they have several different formulas and they aren't NSAID's. I swear by Midol Menstrual Strength (blue box). Oh, by the way here's a link for a list of NSAID's to stay away from. http://nursing.wsu.edu/nsaids.asp Good luck. :o)

I am an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner and I highly recommend the quarterly period. You ahve to be on Bitrth Control for this and you skip the placebos in 3 of 4 months. I am currently doing this with the Evra patch and I have found this to be the best method of dealing with my cramps. You'll have to talk to your health care provider about this b/c they will have to write the script differently. Hope this helps!
