Question:
What should i expect at this point? (weight loss related)

Hi everyone, I'm turning 1 year post-op next month and i have lost 101 pounds. I went from 249 to 148. I am very happy with my loss. I am wondering since my doctor told me i would be loosing until about 18 months, what should i expect at this point. Another 10 pounds in 6 months? I should need an opinion from someone who has been there. Thanks!    — Maria G. (posted on September 27, 2004)

I also started at 249, and ended up at 145 or so. I lost until 13 months post-op and then stopped for a few months, then lost 4-8 more. Go to my profile for a month by month loss. From reading your profile I see that you the loss has slowed to just a pound or so a month now. I would think you will continue to lose a bit more for a little while as long as you continue to follow the rules, and 10 pounds in 6 months is doable but at this point you may have to help it along by upping your exercise and cutting calories. However, since you are already a size 7 be careful about losing too much more as later on it becomes harder to maintain the smaller sizes when your appetite increases and you eat more as you will the further out you get.

Do not think that way. You should not expect a set weight loss. First, everyone is different. You can stay at the same weight for a month and then lose 6 to 7 lbs. Just continue what you are doing, eating and EXERCISING and you will lose inches and weight. Your body will let you know when it's going to start and stop losing. I'm 16 months post-op and have stayed at the same weight for 3 months. Thats ok with me. I'm healthy.

I got down to my goal weight in the first eight months after surgery. I am now almost three years out and flucuate one or two pounds now and then depending on my eating habits. I figured that when my body knew it was at a good weight it quit. I have heard of people losing too much, but not many. And there were reasons for it. Keep doing what you are doing and enjoy your "new life"!

I am 9.5 months post op and have only been losing about five pounds/month for the last three months or so. I was'nt given a time frame by my surgeon. Some other friends of mine who had the surgery said the weight would come off faster for the first year then would slow down. Your body has to adjust but this is a life-long tool to use. We just need to change our diet to maintain the weight when we are done losing. Something I am already guilty of - adding more starches, fiber, fruit etc.

I agree with the other posters that this is such an individual thing. I started out as a lightweight, and as such, I expected to lose weight very slowly. As it turns out I hit my goal weight at 7 months and have lost another couple of pounds past that. Now I've decided I'd like to lose 3 more pounds, just to make it a nice even number, put me at the weight I was in college, and make the size I'm currently wearing just a little looser and better fitting, so I'm not between sizes (can we ever be happy?). But I hope I'm not looking at loosing weight for another 10 months, as that would be just too much. You're body will pretty much make up it's own mind as to when it's ready to stop. Congratulations on your great progress! Katie W.
