Question:
Can I cook with white wine?

I was wondering if any of you knew if post-op RNY patients can safely cook with wine? I haven't read if this would cause me to dump or not. Most of the recipes I have call for 1/4 cup to 1 cup of white wine and are for 3-4 servings. If not, is there something I can substitute for the wine that would work just as well. I really appreciate any replies.    — rinnchris (posted on July 4, 2000)

I substitute chicken broth or water for wine all the time. They work fine...

I am 4 months post-op RNY and had half of a glass of wine at a restaraunt (chianti) and was fine. I didn't dump, but did feel tired a few hours later (which I cannot directly link to the wine). I'm unsure of sugar levels in various wines, but know that the alcohol should cook out during heating time. If you are dispersing the wine in a meal between several servings, you should be fine. As suggested, broth works well, too. Bon Appetitie!

Wine is okay for cooking, since the alcohol is burned off when cooked. Alcohol is guaranteed to cause "dumping."

Cook with wine and sip while cooking if you want. Alcohol is NOT guaranteed to cause dumping. I cook with wine and drink wine with dinner 3 or 4 times a week. Everyone is different...experiment carefully.
