Question:
I lost weight that 1st week-but nothing since!! WHY!!

I am about 3 weeks post-op! I lost 18lbs my 1st week post op. The next week I had my period. Which last about 3 days, I assumed water-retention-stopped my weigh lost. But that is over and I am still not losing anymore weight. I can eat alittle, and I do mean alittle. I drink lots of water. I can't figure out why I am not still losing. Basically it has been two weeks with a 1lb weight lost. Please help!!    — Sheila H. (posted on April 3, 2002)

My husband and I are experiencing the same thing.. our dr. said it was normal. Our bodies are just needing time to adjust to all the changes like getting a lot fewer calories than we used to give it losing a bunch of weight in a week.. etc. He said it was really common to "plateau" right around week 2-3.. he said to be patient and just follow the diet. I know that doesn't help much!! I wish you luck .. congrats on your WLS...

I had lap RNY on Feb 5, 2002. I also hit a plateau during the 2nd week. I lost 28lbs in the first 8 days, then nothing for 2 weeks. I have heard that this first plateau so early on is just your body adjusting to the amount of food that you are taking in. It goes into starvation mode and hangs on to everything you eat. It does go away, and you'll be losing again in no time. I am almost 2 months postop now and have lost 43lbs. Karen

This could have been my post. All I can say is be patient. I lost a total of 22 pounds in month one, 17 of them in the first 10 days! Your body has a lot of adjustments to make, so let it take its time healing. Also don't get on the scale daily- that will make the loss seem to take FOREVER. I am now 3 months po and down 44 pounds! It comes off slowly but surly!! Don't get discouraged yet!

I did the EXACT same thing as you - lost 19 lbs in the first 10 days and then nothing for days. Part of my problem was water intake because once I was able to get more water in the weight started coming off again. 4 weeks out I'm 30 lbs down. Still not getting as much water in as I should (who would have ever thought it was that hard to drink water?), so I'd probably be doing even better if I got it in. Hang in there - you will see the scales move again soon.

No, basically it has been a 19lbs lost in 3 weeks- do you think you could have accomplished that by dieting????? If that 19lbs were split over the three weeks, would that make you feel better? There really is no advice for you. Your body is not going to let this go that easily. You have a struggle ahead convincing it your are getting enough protein and water in otherwise, it will be holding strong onto everything it can. It thinks it is starving. You must convince it that it is not. Stay away from the scale; go back and read the database from hundreds of others just like you...... I'm sure like the rest of us, you poured through them before surgery. You MUST have seen a post such as this then??? If you want something to do, try measuring yourself weekly, rather than weighing. Or grab a pair of jeans and photograph yourself weekly in them- same pose, same position, same location. It will give you something to do to document your weightloss with if you feel the need to; and a little filler for your photo album. Don't let the scale fool you, or determine the way you are feeling for the day. You have a LOOOOOONG ways ahead of you!

I am still pre-op, so not speaking from experience. BUT, I really think that it happens to a lot of people because when your body loses that much weight so quickly from lack of food, it goes on "starvation" mode and starts being extremely conservative. Once you are able to eat MORE it usually should start back up again. Good luck and congratulations, you're doing great!

I had a plateau during week 2 also. I found I was constipated, and I started taking sugar-free Citrucel. It worked like a charm! Weight started coming off again. Just something to consider.
