Question:
What do I do. I plateaud about 6 weeks ago and have been doing everything right!

Please help. I had RNY on November 16th and have lost about 100 pounds. But around 6 weeks ago I stopped losing. I drink at least 64 ounces of water a day and at least 70 grams of protein. I don't eat junk food, I eat things like grilled chicken, salads with lo cal dressing, other healthy foods. I have increased my calorie intake because I was told I may hot be eating enough. I exercise at least 3 times a week, but am not doing weight training, so I know the fat isn't turning to muscle. What is going on? I called my doctors office and asked about a leak, and they told me it was unlikely and if I didn't lose weight in a week doing the things I just listed, to call them back. That will be this coming Monday. Prior to last week I wasn't on such a strict regimen that I put myself on. When you hit a plateau and increase your protein/water/calorie/exercise, how soon should you start losing again? And if this doesn't help, what more can I do? I'm very upset and getting very depressed over all this. Thanx!    — Janet C. (posted on July 13, 2002)

My surgeon said not to have more than 50 grams of protein a day, otherwise too much turns in to fat! Hope this helps, and congratulations on the great weight loss!!!

Janet, don't get discouraged, I have done the exact same thing/ I think our bodies like to pick a "spot" to stand still at, just hang in there and it will start again, remember we are retraining our bodies to be a different weight and sometimes our brain and body work against each other. I don't remember if you said what you needed to lose, but sounds like 100lbs since Nov. is great/ I am sort of a "lightweight" I started out at 258/ (lap rny 9/27/01) 2 months BEFORE you had your surgery, and I have only lost 92 lbs/ but I realize that the less you have to lose the slower you lose it/ I am 10 lbs from goal, but the weight will come off!!! The atkins web site has great advice on platueas. Your body is probably trying to catch up after droping 100lb (by the way that is fantastic) Do a food diary for 2 weeks and see if there is change in your eating patterns. Sometimes you need to change what your eating or the times you eat during the day. Did you know if you go for a morning walk befor you eat in the morning it helps digest your food better during the day. I also suggest you start weight traing to help build muscle mass so you willl not have to worry about addtional surgery to remove excess skin. Don't worry ok!!! I hope this helps be strong hang in there we all get frustrated sometimes.
