Question:
HELP!!! I weighed myself this morning and I have GAINED 4.5 pounds in the last 5 days

I take Provera the first 10 days of the month. Could this be water retention weight? I'm still having difficulty getting all my protein and my water. Will that cause weight gain? I am 7 weeks post-op and I am terrified this is an indication that this surgery isn't going to work. Am I just being neurotic?    — Nanette T. (posted on October 9, 2000)

I don't know about the Provera, but I will tell you that women especially can go through weight swings, especially with our monthly cycles. How often do you weigh yourself? Do what's comfortable for you, but if you do it every week, that may be too much. I only do it once a month, and I find that by doing so, the little ups and downs that my weight may do don't drive me crazy.

Hi Nanette: Relax! I fluctuate daily by about 5 pounds...I know this because I obsessively weigh myself. And I constantly weigh myself because if I'm on a plateau (had millions already!) and/or fluctuating, I don't want to think I've gained 5 pounds either. It could be water retention, or it could be you need more water and protein. I managed to get in over 80 oz. yesterday and woke up 2 lbs. lighter - that was all I needed to make sure I got my two miles in this a.m. Good Luck to you!

"No, No Nanette"...(sorry, couldn't help myself...the thespian in me made me do it) you're not being neurotic. Any weight gain following wls will cause us to get frightened. And I do believe that this weight gain is simple water retention. You mentioned that you're having trouble getting in all your water and protein. I've found that unless I get in in excess of my full 64 oz of water each day, I, too, am prone to water retention and can gain as much as 4-6# overnight. I don't know about the provera but I suspect that it can cause or contribute to weight gain and it certainly would be worth a call to your doctor to check out the possibility. In the meantime, MAKE SURE that you get in every ounce of water that your surgeon recommends as part of your weight loss regimine. Sometimes you can fill a glass "full" but it still won't "overflow" untill you add just a few drops more...get it all in and then a couple sips more just for good measure. Let us know how things turn out. We're all here for you. Good luck and God bless. cj

If you've noticed a weight gain in a five day period (or a weight loss), then you're getting on the scale too often!! Weighing less often (monthly) can help you refocus on your eating habits and not on the numbers on the scale. You don't want to trade one obsession (food) for another (pounds lost). Weighing monthly should help you avoid obsessing over the day to day or week to week variations that are normal.

Hey Girlfriend! I took Provera preop, too and if you are like me, then your period starts around the 12th thru the 16th which makes you pretty PMSsy right NOW. If that is the case- you have gained water weight (and I am pretty positive that is the case:). Don't worry, it will go away. I know I also make it worse because I crave SALT during this time, which only adds to the problem. By the way- I went to BTC tonight and weighed and I am up 5 lbs- but I am PMSd too, so we are going through this together!! Love you!

I am almost 4 months post-op and have lost only 45lbs. I am a scale junky but will not give up that all important number. I bet most of your weight is water weight. I know my weight flucuates with my cycles just as it did pre-op. Now my problem is another plateau. Am I discouraged? Not really. I work out about 5x a week. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I know I am gaining muscle mass. Yes I'm a bit impatient but I didn't gain all this weight over night. I know I am making a life style change and that's what's important now.

Sweetie! Dont panic!! It could be a number of things!! You could be starting your period, had to go urinate or has a bowel movement! Or you could just be retaining water! the best time to get your TRUE weight is when you wake up in the morning after you pee!! because pee is water weight and can add on 3 pounds! So, take it easy! be sure it is in the MORNING BEFORE BREAKFAST and AFTER YOU PEE! or else you will be weighing yourself + pee or yourself + breakfast that hasnt digested yet! good luck!
