Question:
I have vanilla protein mix and already don't like the taste. What are some ways

I can make this taste better. The booklet I have says you can use fruit but it has to be well cooked. (?) Is fresh fruit ok to use? And I'm also concerned that I may be drinking to many fluids. I am having difficulty being able to tell when I'm full. For ex: I had approx. 3 1/2ozs. of chicken broth and let 3 crackers soak until soft. I consummed all but about an 1/8 of it. I sip water off and on all day with the restrictions of the meals, but I'm afraid I will stretch the pouch. Please help. I need some peace of mind. Is this too much for being 5 days post op?    — Myrna E. (posted on September 22, 2003)

The fruit could be canned no sugar added or fresh or frozen no sugar added. I also add no sugar added hot chocolate mix to my protein shake, that improves the taste alot. There is also un-flavoured protien powder available at GNC. This stuff requires the addition of fruit, chocolate or some other flavours.

Flavoring extracts, like maple, rum, almond, coconut, cherry...a few drops flavor a whole glass. I also shake in cinnamon or nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice.

Thanks a lot for the info. :) I hate asking so many questions all the time but all the stuff is so new to me. I still needed to know about the amt. of fluid intake. At 5 days post op, is it ok to eat or do a protein shake like every 2 hrs.? I don't want to overdo and stretch the pouch either. Thanks alot...:)

If you're on full liquids (vs. clear), you can mix it into sugar free pudding. I actually like the taste better now. Just add it the same time as the pudding mix, don't change the milk measurement.

I add a few ice cubes, a little cocoa, and a little decaf instant coffee for a mocha shake. You can add just cocoa and a frozen strawberry or two. How about caramel flavoring (sugar free of course) or black walnut flavoring? Bananas add a thickness if you want your shakes thicker. Canned sugar free peaches if that is your thing--or a teaspoon of fruit spreads (no sugar) to ice and your shake. Be creative! Just be sure to finish each creation to get in your protein.

Myrna, I don't care for the taste of protein powders either. I finally found one I like--it's called Unjury (www.unjury.com). It mixes well, isn't thick and gloppy, and tastes the best of all I've tried. I take 8 oz of sugar free Tang and shake it with 1 scoop vanilla Unjury protein powder; it gives me 20g protein and tastes like an orange dreamsicle--YUMMY! If you go to the Real Meals website, they have a recipe section that you can get some protein shake ideas from. Try them with your powder. Good Luck! Audra Open RNY 8-7-03 248/203/-45

Make sure it is really cold then add a banana and some fresh strawberries and it tastes just like a banana split :)

Try GNC they may be little bit more money but they have a MONEY BACK policy. You can get unsweetened/unflavored protien they have whey or Soy. If you don't like it you can take it back.

I dont think you are taking in too much liquids... Liquids won't stretch your pouch. if you feel too full to take another drink, then maybe you have had a little too much. But liquids are so important, and It is good that you are drinking so much! especially water. God bless on the journey ahead to the new you!

What kind of protein? How'd you make it up? At 5 days, that does sound like a self-defeating eating plan. I woudl eat the cracker crisp, maybe some chicken salad on it or chicken spread. But I was on clears for 4 weeks!
