Question:
progress

HI. I am 11 months post op. I started at 278 and 5' 7" and now I am 162. I gained 5lbs over the Christmas time and have been eating more junk food than I should. I do exercise. I was wondering if I am not going to lose anymore weight and if I am on target for my height and weight? — Carla M. (posted on January 23, 2004)

For your height, if you lose 3 more pounds, you will have moved your BMI from overweight to normal. Whether you lose more or not is up to you. At this stage, if you just continue eating well (less junk) and exercising you may continue to lose slowly for a few more months, however, eating junk will not get you there, but I think you know that. Its no secret how to keep losing, we have to watch the calories and up the exercise (regular heart pumping cardio) to burn what we take in. In your case, cutting back on the junk may be all you need to do.Its a slipperly slope for many posties, once they go back to junk-carbs and sugars-hard to stop. I try to work some sweet treats into my daily diet but am at maintenance and have to keep up the exercise or it will result in a gain.

I am only 3/4 of an inch taller than you, I think it depends on your frame size, I have a large frame and I know the last time I got down to 160 (about 15 yrs ago in college) I was pretty small, I can't imagine going lower than that personally. I imagine it will slow down at this point, and if you want to lose a bit more you might want to up your exercise.

By the way, love your profile, I was thinking I was losing slow and was getting bummed, but looking at your list of weigh ins, I see I am right on track!

I am the same height and had my surgery on 2/18/03, just about the same time as you. I started out at 248 on the day of my surgery and am now 137. I have a pretty large frame and carried most of my weight on my upper body----chest through abdomen. I have been this weight for a month or so now. I never though I'd get this low. I was shooting for 150ish. Anyway, I do cheat at times, as no one is a saint. I am not a dumper so I have to kinda watch myself. I give myself the leeway of staying between 137 and 140. If I hit the 140 mark, I really watch myself carefully for a few days. I am 46 and don't know how old you are, but I think age plays into the speed or ease in which you lose. All I can say is where I started and where I am now. SO, if you go by me it is possible to go loer than 160, but there is no promise you will. Best of luck.

I, too, have been wondering if the weight loss is over. I started getting off track back in November after a four day stay in the hospital for an ulcer. Since then it seems like everything tastes so much better and I can eat so much more. It's almost scary. Anyway, I am 5'7" (had surgery on 1/31/03) and weigh between 134-137...depending on the day....or should I say week. I just keep gaining and losing the same darn three pounds! I would really like to lose another 10 pounds but I'm not sure I should be holding my breath on that one! I know I need to get back on track with the exercise but, that is easier said than done. I know some people continue to lose well past a year - it just takes more effort and determination to do it. I guess, in the end, you need to ask yourself if you are comforable where you are at and if not, how hard are you willing to work to crack down and work at losing any additional weight. Even if you don't decide to go farther, you should be pround of how far you've already come. Good luck to you!
