Question:
I have a question for all of the RYN's

Hello, I'm getting different input from everyone. What type of Iron supplement should I be using. I had LAP RNY 4/16/01 -133 lbs. My doc originally told me to take Ferrous Sulfate with vitamin C, is this right??? Please help! Thanks!    — Kristina P. (posted on October 7, 2002)

From what I understand, carbonyl iron is better absorbed than ferrous sulfate. He's right about taking it with vitamin C. It helps the absorbtion. And don't take it with anything else. No calcium, multi-vitamins, etc. Other stuff will hinder absorbtion. A lot of people like to take their iron and C at bedtime for this reason.

My nutritionist has me taking a multi-vit with iron and that's it. I take Centrum.

I take a centrum chewable, everyday and a Real Meals shake. The shake gives me 60 grams of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin b12, and biotin all in one place. Plus it has lean muscle stimulators to prevent sagging skin. You can get it at www.protein-solution.com.

I didn't take any iron until my 6 month blood work and it found I was still normal, but low normal on the iron. I now take Feosol, an over the counter iron, which is carbonyl iron, along with 500mg of Vit C for better absorbtion. I must say that when I am consistent with the iron, I feel less run down.

i take Perfect Iron from Sundown www.rexallsundown.com with my 500 Vitamin C and I also take these twice a day. The iron pill itself is non toxic, virtally non constipating, superior intestinal tolerance, and highly absorbably and I can attest to the non constipating. I was on a different iron pill that I had to take a softener every other day but on this I have no problems at all.

I also take Carbonyl Iron from Sundown. I was told we absorb very little of the iron in multi vites. I take mine after meals with a small drink of orange juice, as Vit C helps with iron absorbtion. I get mine at Wal Mart.
