Question:
Help with low-carb, high protein diet...

Anyone have any suggestions for a low carb, high protein diet?? I am only 2 weeks post-op and though I have been following my dietitian's guidelines on what to eat I feel as though I am on a plateau... could this be??? How can I break this??? I am getting discouraged because I feel like I am at a standstill... help me please........! ! ! !    — chatterbox213704 (posted on December 23, 2002)

I didn't lose as much as I expected the first month either but it all catches up. Please stick with what your doctor recommends. At only two weeks out your food choices are based more on helping your new stomach heal than anything else. Trying out foods not apporved by your doctor can be dangerous. When I had my surgery the lady I walked the halls with had actually had to come back and have a second surgery because she had chicken at around four weeks and it got stuck to far down for them to scope out. Please be patient wiht your weightloss, it is not unusual to have a little slower loss the first couple of weeks. The early stage food list I was given was about all carbs too, so I think that is pretty standard. Best of luck. Carrie

Kimberly at your early stage, you just need to follow the doctors guidelines as your new tummy heals. A month or so down the road, and the lo carb, high protein diet will kick in but for now, you need to be more concerned with the healing part. The first plateau usually comes about 3 weeks post-op for most and can last a few weeks or longer. Some are lucky and don't experience this but most do. Just continue what you are doing and before you know it it will start dropping again. Don't be discouraged....it will start up again!

Kimberly, the other posters do have a point, but if you're really BORED by all your wonderful choices, here are some good alternatives: do you have cottage cheese? you can change its flavor by adding sugar free jello to it. You can have beef broth instead of chicken broth. You can eat tuna fish--now it comes in flavors. Become acquainted with those herbs that you use only once in a while - how about some sage, or summer savory, or tarragon, how about just snipping in a tiny bit of parsley? It has a very interesting flavor. How about some cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, nutmeg? I even use curry powder, and I like it. You can use these things alone or in combination and they make a difference. Try a little bit on a tiny bite - that way you can decide if you like it or not. Also, at 2 weeks out, you may not be moving around like you used to - I know I wasn't! So, as you feel better, and exercise more, the weight will start DROPPING like you can't believe. Good luck, and have fun in your spice cabinet! Margie
