Question:
I'm so very frustrated, could use the help!!!

Okay, so I know that this question has been asked and talked about to death, but I really feel need to ask, so I'm sorry. I had LAP RNY on Oct. 2nd 2002 and have lost a total of 60 lbs. yeah me!! But for the past 2 weeks I have hit a very nasty plateau. The weird part is, I gain a pound one day, lose it the next day. But still remain at a 60lb. loss. I'm really freaking out here. What if this is really it for me. How will I know if I've failed or if I'm just gotten bitten by the nastiest plateau to ever walk the WLS world?? I usually skip breakfast, so for lunch I'll have a lean cuisine or a pre-packaged low-fat meal, all the protein and then a bite or two of the side if I can. For snack, cottage cheese or cheese, fruit something healthy, I do occasionally have 1 piece of sugar free candy , maybe 3 or 4 times a week, for dinner a pre-package meal if what the fam. is eating does not agree with me, or whatever they eat. Again all the protein and then veggies, if I have room. And I hate to admit, but I'm a late eater!! I know, I know. I don't get to bed till about 3 or 4 AM so at about 10PM I'll have something. Like fruit, ceral, a half a sandwhich, whatever sounds good, that I know is healthy. I drink water all day long!! I just don't know what to do. Please help me. Can you see anything I'm doing wrong? Are you sure it will break, or will it break me?? Thanks so much for all your help!!    — Heather B. (posted on January 9, 2003)

Keeping your metabolism revved up by eating breakfast may help. Seems like your body may almost be going into starvation mode and holding onto the weight because there are long periods of time where it isn't getting any food. Also, Lean Cuisine, although somewhat of a good choice, is full of sodium and MSG. So perhaps having the Lean Cuisines maybe 2-3 times instead of all the time would help. Just a couple of thoughts. At about 4 months out I started losing just 5 lbs. a month. This is how my body is going to do it, I guess. I'm down 93 lbs. at 8 months out now, with about 25 more to go. I eat approximately every 4-5 hours. Hugs, Joy

You know the first thing I would suggest? Not to weigh yourself every day. I probably did also in the beginning, but weight fluctuates during the day and from day to day so why stress yourself out like that? I think weighing once a week at the same time would be better. Believe me, I've had mental distress when weighing every day1 I eat frozen dinners (including Lean Cuisines) almost every day. Its high in sodium, but didn't stop my weight loss. I am working on cutting it down though. The problem is I hate cooking!

Hate to tell you this, but 2 weeks is not a "very nasty plateau". That is reserved for the ones that can last for months! The gain one, lose one, syndrome happens to all of us. The body is just trying to figure out where the 60 pounds went and trying to decide if it should fight to hold onto the rest, or is going to let go. You don't mention your water intake (is it at least 64 oz a day?) and if you are exercising. To get past that plateau, eat more, yes you heard me, eat more. Like breakfast. Sometimes adding a few hundred calories of good protein tricks the body into thinking you are no longer starving it and it starts dropping again. Also, increase protein (less packaged dinners and more home cooked helps), increase water and vary the exercise routine. It will pick up again...
