Question:
Has anyone purchased this new tool called Nutricounter?

I was up uncharacteristically late the other night, I got into a movie that started at 11 o'clock. I think it was meant to be, because a commercial came on about this new calculator type tool that counts everything you have consumed for the day. It splits up the categories into calories, fat, sat fat, sodium, protein, carbohydrates,etc... It stores almost 2500 foods into it's memory, and the first 2000 are already programmed for ease. I went to the website, www.nutricounter.com and checked it out. I'm very interested in purchasing it, however it isn't cheap. It's 3 payments of $40.00, so $120.00. Now, I'm not one to get into keeping track of everyhting I eat, so I never have any idea how much I consume of anything. This would be great. Has anyone here purchased one? Is it worth the money? Check out the website and let me know what you think! Thanks, and I hope everyone who looks and likes it benefits from it!    — wiggie34 (posted on February 4, 2003)

Christine, I saw the same ad & got excited about it until I remembered that I have a free tool like that online. Fitday.com is where I enter everything & keep track of my exercise, food-protein,carbs,fat, vitamins, ect.

I have seen that info-mercial and I personally don't think it is worth the $$. I have kept a food diary everyday since my surgery. I, at first used fitday.com (which has lots of foods already 'programmed' into it), then when it became a pain in the hiney to log on to the internet to enter my log for the day, I went to Barnes and Noble and bought Corinne T Netzer's Dieters Diary for calorie counters for $9.95. It is a compact book and in the back of the book it has a long list of common foods and their calories. I am only required to keep track of calories so this particular book was perfect for me, but they have a ton of other more detailed books available for WAY less than $120. Along the way I have picked up 2 other books on calories and still haven't spent that much! If you are going to keep track of what you eat and carry around a diary all the time, unless you have $120 laying around, go for the cheap thing, it is just as good if not better (no batteries to replace!).

Hi. That gizmo is cool, but a little expensive and the interface is not that high tech. In the past I have used a paper journal to track food intake, and this has made the difference between me maintaining my weight or even loosing and not continuing to gain (I'm still pre-op). Recently I bought a product called "Vivonic Fitness Planner", it's a software program that works on your PC and links to your palm. There are a few tools like it (Diet log is another product), but I thought Vivonic has the best and easiest to use interface and kept track of a lot of nutrients. When I use it consistently it is very helpful. I think it cost around $30 - $40. They also sell a version that has a PDA device with it if you don't have a Palm. It has cool graphics and charts and much nicer than the one on TV. Check out their website. I THINK it's www.vivonic.com. Good luck! - Elizabeth

Hi Christine, I did purchase the Nutricounter and I love it. I am the worst at writing things down and journaling. The Nutricounter is faster since you don't have to write then look up the nutritional information of each food from a book that is if you can find a book that gives you all the info you need. I know that there are computer programs out there, too. But I don't always have the time to sit at my computer and enter this stuff. The main thing that attracted me though was the mobility and convenience of the Nutricounter. You can take it anywhere. On the down side, it is kind of pricey. But for me, if it means being able to tract my intake easily and conveniently (especially in maintaining my weight), then it is worth it.

Hi Christine, I see where you are investigating the NutriCounter, I just got mine yesterday in the mail. I paid $106.**, it had shipped from the NutriCounter web site warehouse in just under 5 days. I am so excited, I've started using it and it is amazing! No, I don't sell them, ha ha but I'm an electronic gadget person and it is very, very easy for anyone to use and you can enter all your favorite food items, so you can personlize it. It adds up your daily intake, gives you where you are in regards of calories, protein, carbs, sugar, etc. Keeps track of daily, and all entries of foods. As I said it is the greatest thing. I had a Weight Watchers food calculator 10 years ago. And it was no where as easy to use as the NutriCounter, you can make it as inclusive and personlized as you feel the need to. Let me know if you get one, I would highly reccomend getting one, it's was my next priority after choosing my wls surgeon after much research and then getting another great tool, the Nutricounter. If you have any questions email me I'll try to help. By the way I have a brain injury, with a short attention span, a short term memory problem, so if I can use it anyone can use it. Your sister in wls, Carol P.S. I'm preop. :-) Just getting everything ready. :-)

I purchased the Nutricounter for my Palm Pilot and loved it. It was really helpful those first six months when I had to keep track of what I was eating --because I never could remember all those details, and I found I was not getting enough nutrition without the reminder that I needed more protein that day. It helped me make better choices. The PDA Version was very cheap in comparison to the whole thing.
