Question:
My employer wants me to pick a new insurance carrier ...
and it will be an individual policy. Can anyone advise me on which one is the best for covering post-op issues, i.e. possible complications, needs for revision, etc. and also is good about covering plastic/reconstructive surgery. My insurance at the time of surgery did NOT cover any aspect of my WLS and since I can pick whatever I want now, I want to find one that will cover any problems, even if I have to do the waiting period. — KelBurt (posted on February 11, 2003)

Any thoughts? Anyone??

When I first decided to have WLS, I found out that my insurance didn't
cover it. So I waited until our company policy was up for renewal.
Luckily, I'm the one who decides what to get. So we are probably in the
same situation, and that makes us lucky. Here's what I did. I picked my
surgeon, then looked on his information page here on obesityhelp.com. I
checked to see which insurance company seemed to be approved the most
people the fastest. Turns out it was Aetna, so that's what I signed our
company up for. Our policy started on November 1st, I had my paperwork for
surgery in the first week of November and had it on December 6th.

Monica's suggestion is excellent. Pick a surgeon first, then speak to the
person his/her office who handles insurance approvals. She will be able to
tell you which one to choose.
