Question:
Any problems with bruising?

I am almost 11 months post-op and have lost 102 pounds. For the last several months I have had mysterious bruises appearing, mostly on my legs. I don't ever remember bumping into anything or anything else that could cause these bruises, I don't even know I have them most of the time until somebody else notices them. Has anyone else had this problem? If so did you find out what might be causeing them or what to do about it? Thanks    — leeann N. (posted on July 2, 2003)

I know there are medical conditions and deficencies that can cause mysterious bruising so it's a good idea to talk to your PCP about it. I did have this start when I was about 8 months out and we determined it was from clumsiness brought on by quick massive weight-loss. Offset my balance so I was walking into walls and such. A real pain! Now that I'm more aware of it, I watch my actions more and have slowed down my movements some. But yes, talk to your doctor about it and never assume!

I had the same thing about 8 months post op. It stopped as quickly as it started but for a while i was very upset because i was always getting bruises on my legs. i was beginning to think i was having memory lapses and bumping into things. LOL it will stop in time. I asked my dr about it and he wasn't concerned.

You may want to have your B12 levels checked. I woke up several weeks ago with the weirdest bruises on my arms. It looked like someone had grabbed both my upper arms, leaving three finger long bruises on each arm. I have no idea how I got them, as I'm sure I'd remember someone touching me like that. A lot of people noticed them and asked about them. One was a nurse, who knew nothing about my surgery. When I told her I had no idea how I got them, she immediately suggested I have my B12 levels checked. It seems one of the symptoms of low B12 levels is "mysterious" bruising.

I would call your surgeon first and then your pcp. The reason is sometimes your surgeon can identify something that many be related to wls, if he says it isn't then call your regular doctor. I know someone with another condition that went through months of pain and been to her regular doctor several times and he wan't educated as to the common complications related to wls. As soon as she called her surgeon it was fixed in a day.

Thanks for all the advise everybody, I will contact my surgeon and I'm due to have my lab work done again anyway, so we will see if I'm low on anything. Thanks again, leeann

Hi, I agree with the first poster. I am anemic. When I am taking my iron supplements I have little trouble with bruising. When I go off them I turn into one big bruise.

I am only four months out and have been seeing bruises mysteriously appear since about a month out. I had my three month lab work done and my iron and my B12 where both good. The nurse said that it was nothing to worry about. Now I wonder if I should call my PCP about it. - Marcy
