Question:
Has anyone had a plateau at 3 months and if so, how did you break it?

Hi: I was wondering if anyone else is having or had a plateau at three months post op. I have lost 50 lbs so far (20 in the first 10 days) and had a plateau at 2-3 weeks out. It lasted 3 weeks or so and then broke. I lost consistenly but about two weeks ago it stopped. I was wondering if this was normal. I also was wondering what kind of food do most of you eat. I have been eating mainly what I have been cooking for my family but having small portions and very little of the starches. (i.e. I have made low fat beef stroganoff and chicken franchaise). Should I be eating more plain/bland foods. I get so afraid that I wont make my goal weight. Also, have any of you found that the less weight you have to lose the slower it comes off? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! Maryann    — MaryannC (posted on February 25, 2004)

Maryann- Many of us (who are your neighbors from the Norwalk Hospital program) have been able to avoid long plateaus by following a simplified version of the Atkins Induction Phase Diet for about 3 days. By increasing protein to at least 80 grams a day and decreasing daily carb intake to no more than 20 grams for those three days, slow weight loss is sped up. After that, you just need to determine the amount of carbohydrate your body can withstand and still lose weight (everyone is different in this regard-- for me, it is about 45-50 grams of carb).

I hit a plateau between 3 and 4 months. I knew it was just my body adjusting so I put away the scale and only got on it once a week. I also increased my activity level, but for hte most part I just waited it out. It took almost 3 weeks, but it picked up again at the same pace I was losing before. Just hang in there and give your body time to reassess itself.

Increase your daily exercise by 1/2 hour a day.

I hit a plateau at 3 months and it lasted for almost a month but when I started dropping again, it came off quickly. It took me 9 months to lose 100 lbs. but, in some ways, I'm really glad I've lost slowly. In the end, it doesn't really matter. I've lost the weight and that's all that I care about. It's gonna keep coming off you, just be patient!

I am 3 months post op as of yesterday and I saw my surgeon today for a 3 month check up. I have lost 46 lbs which equals 34% of my excessive body weight. I have hit a plateau too at 3 months but I am not too worried, it will break and I will start losing again. My surgeon said I was doing great and my weight loss is great and to expect plateaus and then weight loss more often now.
