Question:
Help me figure out why my sudden weight gain!!!!

Sudden weight gain!!! Please help me figure this out! I had RNY about 15 months ago. I have reached my goal weight of 135 and had maintained it for going on 9 months. But for some strange reason from Sat (5 days ago) until today I have gained more that a pound a day! I am back up to 141 lbs this morning, and as far as I can tell I have not changed any eating habits. I am usually between 133 or 136. This is extremely weird to me! I should not be pregnant because I had my tubs tied about 11 years ago and I just had a normal menstrual cycle. I just can not figure out what is going on with me. I have not gone above 136 pounds since Sep 2003, I am gaining more that a pound a day! Please help me figure this out!    — 1ariel (posted on June 17, 2004)

Could you be retaining fluid? Are your finger puffy? Your rings tight?

I had my surgery in Jan 2004 and for last 3-4 weeks I have not lost any and I am scared I will start gaining buthow I don't know? If you don't mind me asking what weight did you start at because my goal is l30-l40 lbs and was wondering if I'll ever get there. I should I know but like all other diets I went on at some point you start to gain again. Maybe you are taking in too much salt, I know friend of mine said the other day she gained a few pounds and was using too much salt. I know I should be using skim milk, diet cheese and stuff like that. But I don't eat any sugars, pasta or breads. Hoping the wieght will start to fall again. Nice chatting to you anmd thanks for listening. Donna

To have gained 5lbs in 5 days you would really remember eating an insane amount of food. I would imagine that it is water retention. Eating alot of salt stuff? Have you cut down on your water intake? More caffeine? All of these things can cause you to retain water. That and a kid messing with the scale. *Wink* I bout fainted when I got on the scale to find a 12lb gain one day, only to realize that it wasn't set at zero. :)

Hi! 1. if you are late, have a pregnancy test anyway...I had my tubes tied 7 years ago, and last October, I was pregnant! For those women who do get pregnant again, there is significant risk because the occurance of eptopic pregnancy is much, much greater (that is what happened to me) 2. watch your salt...I tend to gain and hold a few pounds after consuming a few salty snacks. 3. Mix up your diet routine...add more protein, change the types of carbs/proteing etc. Add more water. Good Luck! (CB - 1/24/03 - 298/157)

Congratulations on getting to goal and maintaining it for so long! I just read your profile and it seems that you are on top of it and have a plan. Although I am a pre-op I know that once I have reached my goal weight, maintaining it is going to be a continuing battle. I admire the fact that you are on top of these 5lbs, before 5lbs become 15lbs and so on. Keep up the good work!

I was told that most WLS Post-ops gain 20-30% of their weight because they usually go way below the acceptable "norm" I would not worry unless your appetite has increased a lot also.

Stephanie not to scare you but you prob had RNY Proximal which is most common . I have had 3 friends at different times differ Docs had the surgery Proximal and after 1 1/2 -2 1/2 years start gaining their weight back as well. I had the RNY Distal and know for a fact My Doc has REDONE patients who had the RNY Proximal because they gain their weight back.... I would defiantely look into seeing another surgeon who does RNY DISTAL in your area , you might be one of those who gain it back . HAVE YOU SEENCARNIE WILSON LATELY she is a perfect example of this. Hope this helps Lisa S.

Stephanie...you may be retaining some fluid. Try to think if you've eaten any food that's high in sodium or have you tried any new recipes that may have a higher amount of sodium than you realize. I gained 6.5 pounds in 2 days, not once, but twice. We never figured out what caused that dramatic weight gain in a short time, but whenever I do gain a few pounds, I try to eat some different types of food than I normally eat and I also do my exercise routine differently and make sure I drink more fluids. I'm 5 months post op and have lost 84 pounds.

You know, this happens to me EVERYtime I eat tomato sauce. The next day, 4-5 lbs gain. I bet it's salt in something you've eaten ;)

Hi, I don't know if you are still having the weight gain problem, if so I would recommend calling your doctor. Are you experiencing any shortness of breath or swelling. Sometimes heart and lung problems manifest with weight gain due to fluid retention. I don't want to alarm you, but you said your diet didn't change. good luck.

If you are continuing to gain weight at a pound a day...call your physician...a few pounds here and there and then to lose it is one thing...that is normal...but to continue to gain weight and since you haven't changed anything in your eating...I'd call the doc to make sure there is nothing going on medically with you...good luck!
