Question:
I have not lost a lb. in 8 months now.

My appetite has has increased over the last several months (RNY/Lap 5/10/2004)and I have had lost about 85 lbs since surgery in 2004, but I have not lost a lb. since my last checkup in January. As a matter of fact I seem to have gained a few inches around the middle over the last few weeks. I can still wear size 6s or 8s, but some of them are not as comfortable. Do you think that my body is just adjusting to my new weight? I do exercise occasionally, maybe not as much as I should though.    — mypookface (posted on August 21, 2005)

HI, I would say if you can still wear a 6 or 8 your doing great.. do you drink your protein? I am 2yrs out now and still do my protein and that keeps me even and I still lose here or there but pretty much stay at what I am. I think protein is a must. your body is probabley where it wants to be I would not stress you dont want to get any smaller do you.. tons of blessings, Cheryl

I am 2+ years out and have remained at the same weight for about 8 months now. I think your body adjusts to a weight and you bounced up and down 3-5 pounds. I think it is an adjustment phase. I up my protein and stop the snacking (maily candy) and I start on the down spiral once more. Try not eating something that might be a little problem for a week and see if that doesn't jump start your losses again. Once you start losing the self-confidence will kick in and you will want to continue with the good eating. Good luck. Missy.

OK, I'll be the one witht he unpopular answer... No, I don't think your body is 'adjusting' to your new weight. I ASSUME that because you are concerned about losing more weight and you only lost for the first, what 8 months after surgery- that you still have MORE weight to loose. So- here's my answer. Congrats on loosing the 85 lbs. If you want to continue loosing weight, you have to control you intake AND exercise strenuously on a regular basis (min 3x a week) That's pretty much all there is to it, unless you are suffering from something medical that you have not indicated here. 50% of weight loss for Gastric Bypass patients is from THE TOOL. The other 50% is how WE work the tool. There are many many resources here and in the WLS community in general that you can call upon if your goal is to continue loosing. Best of luck to you.

I have not lost anything in the last 5 going on 6 months and I believe it is due to my eating more crabs and some junk such as a few chips every few days or so as well as I drink decaf coffee every night before bed. I have gotten in the habit of tasting what I am cooking also to see if it needs more salt or spices. I cook everyday for my family and it is healthy foods, but when I taste it while it is cooking I am not hungry after it is done. I have slacked on my veggies as well. I have always had a problem eating meats and will eat a small amount of it and drink a protein shake to supplement the lack. I am getting back on track starting today and am sticking with it. I also exercise 3 times a week, but have not done so in the last 2 weeks due to a fall. I have to exercise with limitations due to rheumatoid arthritis, but I do it for an hour. It is getting harder for me as I get farther out to eat healthy and exercise. I try hard to not fall back into the same old habits. They are there and they will temp me daily.

Ah, if you are wearing size 6/8, what's the issue? I don't think I've ever been that small in my life. You didn't say where you started from but 85 pounds may have been all you needed to lose. 65% of excess weight (not total weight) is a sucessful surgery.

I went about a year (or more) without losing and in fact, gained 20 lbs in a year. Of course, I wasn't drinking much water (about 32 oz a day) and really wasn't paying attention to what I was eating and not getting much protein (or exercise) either. Then I realized I was retaining water really bad, had no energy, etc. and just felt crappy in general. So I went to see my doc. After some tests, she decided my heart was okay and put me on water pills. With this, I increased my water to 64-90 oz a day, am now getting 85-100 g protein each day, staying under 1000 calories and I have lost that 20 pounds and 5 more since July 1. I got down to 126.4 as my all time low, but now I'm up to 127 and seem to be stuck there (for the past week). Now I just need to figure out what to do to get unstuck and finish losing so I can get to my personal goal of 110. I know that seems low, but I am only 4'10-3/4 tall. I started at 206.6 in Oct. 2002 - almost three years out now. I don't see how I can up my protein or water any more than I am. Not sure how to move it again. Hope this helps you a little. You're not alone. Good luck! --Pam

Hettie, How much protein have you been getting in? that may be what you need. I hit a plateau at one time and I increased my protein intake with Shapeworks Protein Drink Mixes and the Formula 2 Multivitamin Complex by Herbalife. These have seemed to help me when I plateau. Look for these at www.herbal-nutrition.net/nstradford. I became a distibutor after I used some of their products and really liked them. I hope this can be helpful.
