Question:
How much are other 2-3 week post-ops eating?

I'd like to hear from other recent post-ops or others who can remember back to when they were first starting to eat regular meals with a smaller stomach. Im a little over 2 weeks out and already Ive vomited 2-3 times because I keep eating too much too fast. I bought 2 soft tacos today at Taco Bell and some Nachos and for lunch I ate just a couple bites of one taco and a few chips. When I got home I tried to finish off the taco and ended up stuffing myself until I threw up. I think someone has to hit me over the head before I learn my lesson. How much are you other post-ops eating right now?    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 2, 1999)

You are eating the wrong types of food. Go to this site to see the types and amounts of foods you should be eating. http://www.sabariatric.com/diet_after_gastric_bypass.htm

I think part of the problem may be the foods you're eating--at 2/3 weeks postop, I was eating no more than 3 oz. at each meal of soft and pureed foods (scrambled eggs, grits, cream of wheat, baby food, etc.). You probably need to talk to a nutritionist to learn some better food choices. I'm now 4 months postop, and have lost 70 pounds without vomiting even once...BUT I have done everything the dr. and nutritionist told me to, so I know their advice works. Good luck--

I was told by my Dr. to have only liquids or blended foods for the 1st 4 weeks. I am now 11 weeks post op and still have problems with some solids. I have been sticking with soups and baked potatoes etc.. I have had a taco one time and it went ok but one taco filled me up. Hard shell seems to settle better than soft shell it swells in your tummy I think. The hardest part is stopping when you don't feel hungery anymore instead of when the food is gone. I am working hard on that concept. I have thrown away more food in the last 11 weeks that you can imagine! I'm at [email protected] if you want to talk. Be patient and you'll start feeling better, it'll just take a while.

Hi. At 2-3 weeks post-op I was still on full liquids. The 'little cheats' that I was allowed, reluctantly, were very softly scrambled eggs, soupy mashed potatos, applesauce, stuff like that. As much as I wanted food, and did cheat a little, a soft taco is something I would have NEVER tried at that point. I was too scared that I would damage my new stomach! Are you following the diet your doctor prescribed for you? It just seems a little early for beef. Good luck, I hope you're feeling better. I think you answered your own questions. I am over 7 months post-op, and usually can only eat ONE taco from taco bell. I think you need to let your stomach heal before you start eating fast foods again. I learned the hard way myself, that you have to slow down! Good Luck!

Tomorrow I will be 4 weeks post-op. I am still on pureed foods another 2 weeks. I am scared to death to try a taco or anything crunchy or not mushy. Talk to you doc. I would suggest going back to full liquids and pureed foods and staying there a few weeks. I have not thrown up yet (knock on wood) and have had only one bout of dumping. I eat small amounts (approx. 1/4 - 1/3 cup) at a time every 2 - 3 hours--more if I'm really hungary. I never feel stuffed but am usually not hungary either. Also, be sure you are getting protien supplement. It is much more filling and helps with hunger. Good luck. Let us know how you do.

Which type of WLS did you have??? I am almost one week post op and I am struggling to find enough liquids to make it through 3 weeks. You are not supposed to be eating anything at this point, only liquids. On my 4th week I may begin to try pureed foods, then progress a week after that to try soft foods. You really need to be careful or throwing up will be the least of your problems. You need to treat your new stomach the way you would a newborn. Would you feed a newborn a taco? Not to be mean, but here is your pounding over the head! ===[] bam bam

I am six weeks post op from an Open RNY. I have not yet had any episodes of vomiting, however,I have had food get "stuck" from eating too quickly and found it to be quite uncomfortable. I generally can eat only a few bites of a soft taco, ( chicken only ) I do well with that but suggest that you try to pace yourself, even if it requires using a timer at first or looking at your watch, try to give each bite time to go down and settle. Dont drink with food, at least at first, it made me nauseous and made the food that didnt want to go down all the more uncomfortable. If you find you are still having problems with vomiting after slowing down, you also must look at the foods you are eating, sometimes if your food is too rich or too hard to digest you will have problems getting sick as well. If problems persist, contact your doctor or nutritionist, they can suggest something to help you better manage the sickness and to choose foods that will settle better on your stomach.
