Question:
This morning I awoke with a hard swelling under my main incision.

It is about 3x4 inches. It is tender but not red and hard to the touch. I put in a call to my surgeon and am still waiting for them to call back. Can anyone help me with this? What could it be. I had VBG/lap on 1/19/00. Thanks    — marilyn P. (posted on February 3, 2000)

This sounds Like you've got an infection on your incision site. You need to get it looked at right away. It will not get better on it's own. You need some sort of atibiotics or to possible have it drained. Good Luck!

Marilyn, I too had the same problem, but mine was just 5 days post-op. I had open RNY 1-11-00. I called my surgeon and he said if it isn't red and hot, it could just be swelling from the trauma of surgery. He told me to apply heat, and see if that helped. It did. It is still a little swollen, and when I saw him a few days later for 2 week post-op visit, he said it was probably swelling from all the layers of fat and stitches. I asked about a hernia, and he said if it was, it was very deep and to not to worry, my intestines weren't falling out!!! {that's exactly what I was thinking!} He said with time, the swelling would subside, and it already has. I realize we had a diffrent type of surgery, so this may or may not help. Good luck and keep me posted. Dani
