Question:
With a preop weight of 329, is it possible to reach ideal weight?

I am seven weeks postop Open rny distal, and down forty pounds. I am just curious if there is anyone else out there that started at 300 or more pounds and actually reached their ideal weight. I am 5-6 and would ideally weigh anywhere from 130-150, is it possible to be this successful? I have been overweight my whole life and would for once just like to have a normal weight and not be considered "overweight".    — Kelly P. (posted on August 17, 2000)

I'm in the process of being approved for a RNY but my sister was in your exact position when she has an OPEN RNY with Dr. Anez in Fairfax, VA. She weighed 320 lbs when she went in for surgery in 2/99. She is 5'3". She couldn't wear much in a large women's store. I would have said it was impossible for her to get to ideal weight, but she has. She weighs 130 now and wears a size 4. Her weight will drop a bit more after her tummy tuck this fall. We just went shopping togeather and it was amazing. She had never worn less then a 14/16 in her adult life and that was just for a few months. Anyway, she does everything she is supposed to including having a personal trainer, now 1/week. She started with twice a week. She never exercised regularly before other than walking and now she has these fabulous muscles, She certainly is my inspiration. Good luck to you, too.

I sure as h*ll hope so! LOL! I was 310 at my last pre-op visit and 327 when I was discharged. Today I am also 7 weeks post-op distal RNY, and I have lost 58 pounds so far. I am 6' tall, so my goal is 155 to 185, but anything under 200 will be a thrill. Good luck to you...we will do this! Luv,....

I weighed 350 pre-op & now, 18 months later, I am weighing around 175, which is 10 pounds over my ideal weight of 165. I am 5'9 & find that my weight varies about 10 pounds, from 173 to 181, or so. I don't know why it does this, but this has been my pattern for the last six months.. I gain two, I lose three, etc, etc. I do continue to weigh frequently as I do NOT want to start gaining. I am on no specific "diet" & eat pretty much whatever I want. I, like others, haven't gotten to "exactly" my goal weight, but at only 10 pounds off, with a BMI of 25-26, & in size 12, I couldn't be happier. I'd write more, but I'm going skiing in the morning & have to be up early! Yes, it CAN happen for you; if it can work for me, it can work for anyone!

I started at 320. I'm 15 mos post op and am down to 155 and i'm still losing but it's slow going now. You shouldn't have any problem getting down to where you want to be. I'd like to hit 130 myself. Good luck.

I started out at 322 and had open RNY on 2/11/02. In 6 months I have lost 124 pounds, with about 23 more to go until I am at my goal (I am 5 ft 10). Even if it took another 6 months to lose 23 pounds, I am incredibly thrilled with the surgery.

Don't get discouraged! I'm 16 weeks today and am down 77 pounds, I weighed 327 when I went into surgery on April 23rd, I didn't figure I would lose 50 pounds by now. I don't see it but other folks do and my clothes are falling off LOL!!!:) So keep your chin up and God's Speed. Sharon

I have not reached my "ideal" weight yet but am only 44 1/2 pounds away from it!! I had my surgery 7/9/03, on the day of surgery I weighed 301 pounds. I am only 5'3" tall. I am feeling great & healthy. It is certainly my intention to reach my ideal weight!! I am working out @ Curves 3 times a week & walking the other 4 days. I am working hard.
