Question:
I asked earlier about not being able to eat soft food until aug.

i am haveing the (RNY) open on the 11th andi am so scared about not being able to eat untill aug. at least that is what it says on my papers that they gave me at the hospital. the nutritional guidelines after gastric bypass surgery, it says stage 1 clear liquids (week #1) stage 2 full liquids (week #2-4)stage 3= pureed foods(week#5-12)baby food consistency stage 4soft foods the rest of the time. is that how the rest of you guys have to do?    — Brenda M. We do 4 weeks clear, 2 weeks puree, 2 weeks soft. We never do a "full liquid" or baby food phase because we don't touch milk or sugar ever again (those are very high sugar diets). We start protein supps (not milk or Ensure types) and full vites on Day 7. So, we're busy trying to juggle it all to get it in. We're also not starving because of the protein supps we do. And our real food is somewhat graduated, but only logically. Raw fruits & veggies are last.

I am 3 weeks and 4 days post-op, today for lunch I had four bites of chopped chicken breast, four bites of mashed potatoes & gravy, five bites of mac & cheese, and two bites of bread. I found that I can tolerate pretty much all different types and textures of food, just in much, much smaller amounts, but I have heard of people who can not tolerate solid foods even at 12 weeks post-op. It may sound crazy but you will know when your body is ready to move on to the next level. Just remember to chew, chew, and then chew some more! And try to take at LEAST 20 minutes to finish your meals! Hope this helps releive some of your stress, GOOD LUCK!
