Question:
Am I going through this pain for nothing?!

I know this has been posted before but I'm in way too much pain to check the library. I'm five days post-op and have not lost ONE SINGLE POUND! I have gained 8 lb.s from the morning of surgery. Am I going through THIS for nothing?!    — Lorraine L. (posted on May 20, 2001)

I also had gained weight right after surgery. Look at what your body has gone through. You have internal swelling, and probably some water weight. If you have read this website at all you KNOW it will be worth it in the long run. The best advice I can give you is to NOT obsess on the scales. Give yourself at least 2 weeks before you weigh. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for dissappointment.

Hang in there Lorraine! I know my abdomen is all swollen up (5 days post) and I am sure I am retaining water. I told my husband I feel like I am pregnant with all this pressure under my ribs and gas burbling around inside feels like something living in there. Stay off the scale until you see your doctor again. That is what I am going to do. I know this is working! It will be so exciting when you step on the scale one month from now. Rebeckah

I gained 8# in the hosptal due to fluids pumped in. Then I gained 5# at home from not drinking enough water. Then my husband moved the scale. And I lost 150# and have kept it off for over 6 yrs (surgery was 7 yrs). So, was it worth it, oh YEAH. Was it slow to get started? Yep.

I am 3 1/2 weeks post op but the first week I lost NOTHING! The IV in the hospital is sugar-water and until you can drink enough fluids to sustain you, you will not lose. After losing NOTHING the first week, I have now lost 20 pounds in 3 1/2 weeks. Be patient. I only weigh once a week max so I don't see the ups and downs that will occur if I weighed daily. GOOD LUCK and the pain wasn't in vain!

Stay off the scales. They are your enemy. Your weight is gonna fluctuate so much from any given day that it will drive you crazy weighing so often. Your husband should hide them too!!:o) Iv lost 120 pounds and I think I said those very same words in the beginning plus some more very choice ones!! But now Im so pleased with my loss. Please give your body time to adjust. Take care, We care. Margaret

I gained 22 lbs. in the hospital from the IV fluids. Yes, 22 lbs. It took me 3 weeks to lose that weight just to get back to what I weighed the morning of surgery. The good news is that I am now -75 at 4 1/2 months post surgery (or you could say -97 if you included the weight I gained)! Try not to fret - the weight will come off!
