Question:
How long can a plateau last?

I am 11months post op. I was 264 pre-op and now 198 so you can see that I have only lost 66 pounds in ll months. I do tend to graze when I eat. I work full time in an office. I eat mostly protein, eggs, meats and cheese. Sometimes it takes me 3 hrs to complete a meal. I do suck on cinamon candy but not every day. I don't eat breads and I have potatoes occasionally. I don't eat fruit and only drink sugar free snapple and water of course. I don't understand why I'm on this long plateau. Can anyone help?    — Victoria B. (posted on February 20, 2002)

Victoria they say everyone looses differently. I am 9 months post op and just hit my 100lb mark. The way that I do mine is I do eat 6 small meals a day. I seem to get hungry more often. I make sure that I get a lot of water in. Don't eat alot of sugar. You didn't say if you exercised. I workout at least 5 times a week and that is only if they force me not to. Sometimes if you have someone you can talk to and support you that has gone through the surgery it helps. If you need an ear you can always e-mail. I wish you luck and don't give up. It was the best thing I ever did.

You shouldn't take 3 hours to eat a meal. You should only eat till your full - no longer than 30 minutes I would think-then stop. You are probably eating too much as you can fit a lot more in during 3 hrs. Eat in a quiet spot without distractions, no reading, watching TV - anything. That might help. And remember the water. Take care and good luck

Plateaus happen, but they shouldn't last longer than 3 weeks or so. If they do, you're probably not following a strict enough regimen. Drink more, eat more protein and exercise more. This will likely do the trick.
